Houzz Tour: Cool, Calm and Charismatic Home in the Heart of Mumbai
Soft hues, a mix of materials, handpicked art and an understated elegance make this the perfect nest for a creative duo
An all-white shell, accentuated with pastels, natural light and sleek custom furniture, is the basis of the design of this Mumbai abode. It’s a modern, minimalist haven that features crisp, straight lines and subtle accents. “The style of the house is very tone-on-tone, with lots of neutrals – a palette that is very soothing to the eye. Since the homeowners (a couple) are ad film professionals, they wanted their house to reflect a little glamour but in a very subtle and smart manner,” Kumpal Vaid, founder of Purple Backyard, says.

The foyer leads into the living area on the right and the dining area on the left, the former dominated by an impressive oil painting and a large striped couch. “The wife already had a painting handed down to her by her father and the pinstriped couch which she had purchased earlier. The couple wanted the living room to be designed around these two focal points. To highlight these pieces, the decor needed to have a toned-down look, so we played with white walls, neutral armchairs and a mirrored centre table. The large windows, which allow ample light inside, brighten up the living room, “ Vaid says.

The dining area houses a white dining table and a feature wall. “The dining table was custom-made, with large pieces of cut glass and carved legs that catch the eye but still look subtle due to the overall neutral tone,” Vaid says.
Four doors can be seen from the dining area – the one on the left leading to a bedoom converted into an entertainment-room-cum-home-office, two more to the guest bedroom and the master bedroom. The fourth door is to the kitchen.

“The feature wall in the dining room is done in a material which is an aggregate of stone. A local artist was engaged to hand-paint motifs on it,” Vaid says.

The first door leads off into the entertainment-room-cum-home office. The idea was to make it into a multi-functional space – as a reading nook, a work area and one for entertaining friends. “The husband is a voracious reader and the couple loves to travel. Since the room isn’t large enough to display all their books and curios, we decided to build a plywood unit to store all their accessories and tomes. We specially got a sleek sofa bed designed for the space and sourced the pendant light from a local market,” Vaid says.

“To visually cut down the cabinet’s bulkiness, we lacquered it in white and cut its height to about 5 feet. The unit contains the husband’s books, travel collections and also houses a small refrigerator, which they use on days when they are entertaining,” Vaid says.
Next to the entertainment-cum-home office is the guest bedroom, styled with yellow curtains, neutral-toned bedding and large windows. “A lot of thought went into designing this room. The idea was to give the visitors utmost comfort and to make them feel welcome. Since the visiting guests could be a couple or individuals, we decided to have two separate beds instead of a single large one. Each bed has a side table,” Vaid says.
“We did not want to stick to the regular idea of having a dressing table or vanity in the room. So, we decided to place a nice floor-to-ceiling vintage mirror with a side table. Also a large sofa that they could relax in,” Vaid says.
The guest bathroom has a quaint quality to it. The floating vanity has lots of storage space. “The large back mirror makes the area look bigger and more spacious,” Vaid says.
Next to the guest room is the master bedroom. “The room has a subtle charm to it, mostly featuring neutral and pastel hues. Take for example the custom cupboard, which was painted white so it blends in with the bleached walls and flooring,” Vaid says.
The striking feature in this bedroom is the large bed. “The room sizes in this apartment are fairly decent, so the client did not mind accommodating large pieces of furniture here. They initially wanted a fourposter bed for the master bedroom but we chanced upon this design and got it for the room. Since the bed’s design and style is larger-than-life, we decided to tone down the rest of the room by using soft-hued elements, like the bedspread, the curtains, the sofa and even the white cupboard,” Vaid says.

“The master bathroom has a calming design, too, but we made a feature wall to add a little drama. We used red tiles behind the sink although the rest of the room is a very serene, soft-looking space,” Vaid says.
