Mumbai Houzz: A Joint Family Flat Gets a Contemporary Facelift
Inside this neutral shell, ShroffLeĆ³n create a tactile, soothing haven by opening up spaces and using lush furnishings & subtle pops of hues
This sea-facing apartment originally had several bedrooms and was occupied by a large joint family. Over time, as family members moved out, the number of inhabitants came down to six ā parents, children and grandparents. The home required a contemporary facelift and the number of bedrooms needed to be brought down to three. For this, the clients sought the help of Kayzad Shroff and Maria LeĆ³n of ShroffLeĆ³n.

āThe main thrust of our design proposal, in addition to reworking the internal space was also extending the windows down to the floor in every room, which allowed for not only the space to be significantly brighter but also assisted in the home being perceived as visually larger,ā says Shroff of ShroffLeĆ³n.
The living room is a bright, neutral space where subtle colours through furnishings punctuate the ivory scheme. Most of the furniture here is custom made. āThe clients had requested an all-white home, which immediately put us out of our comfort zone, forcing us to experiment with different materials, shades and textures, all within the white palette, which resulted in a fresh aesthetic,ā says LeĆ³n of ShroffLeĆ³n.
The outdated old 3x4 windows were replaced with floor-to-ceiling French windows that invite fresh air and natural light, which helps make the space appear larger and airier. āMoreover, an existing niche due to column placement allowed for the creation of a small pooja room [not pictured] ā one that is concealed within a network of grooves, and only accessible to those familiar with the space,ā Shroff says.

The open plan of the living-cum-dining room makes the entire space seem like an expansive one. The neutral effect of white is offset by the vibrant blue custom-made chairs that also add warmth to the space. āThe dining area is highlighted with two walls in a textural stucco grey with a large feature lighting fixture above the dining table, which forms the focus of the space,ā says LeĆ³n.

The master bedroom follows the muted theme of the living room; carefully chosen elements help induce colour and whimsy into the space. āThe walls within the master bedroom are accentuated with strips of textural white paint, along with the normative zinc paint, separated by vertical highlights of black channels,ā says Shroff.

For the cupboards āa similar geometry is extended with a combination of PU paint and leather,ā LeĆ³n says.
The grandparentsā room is a cosy, warm space where soft materials and tones make home. āFor this room we used a geometric full-height leather backboard as the main feature element. A playful addition was the cupboard with a couple of vertical strips of open shelves within the closed storage,ā says Shroff.

The childrenās bedroom follows a soft palette where a textured beige wallpaper forms the backdrop for the bed. Blue accents add extra pep.
āThis entire home is a story in colour and its effect on spaces and people. As a sensory perception, colour has the power to produce effects that are symbolic, associative, synthetic and emotional. It is perhaps why colour therapy and colour psychology have flourished in current times. Even in the architecture and design world, colour is no longer just a decorative element. This home is an example of that,ā Shroff says.
