Mumbai Houzz: A Flat Gets Its Sheen Under a Tight Deadline
This young couple's apartment designed by Purple Backyard was given spirit and soul with bold wallpapers and furniture sourced mainly online
A young working couple, who were keen to move into their new home, approached Kumpal Vaid of Purple Backyard to get the flat ready in record time. “I had to work within time constraints for this quintessential compact Mumbai flat. Since the couple wanted to move in asap, I had to make sure that everything had a quick turnaround time. So, I used a lot of online brands for furniture, decor, accessories and paints. In fact, instead of interior designing, this was more of an interior styling project,” Vaid says.
The living room features a large blue sectional that maximises seating. The brick-patterned wallpaper by Nilaya adds texture to the space. “We wanted the big blue sofa to be the standout feature in the room. The owners wanted a quirky space that also talks about their travels, so we framed their travel pictures on the wall and chose a rustic coffee table that shows wear and tear –a shabby chic look. The ceiling-to-floor curtains make the room look larger than it really is,” says Vaid.
The living room opens to a small balcony (also connected to the master bedroom) furnished with wooden deck flooring and yellow outdoor chairs.

The kitchen was entirely refurbished with new wall tiles and cupboards. “Since we introduced a very heavy pattern on the backsplash, we decided to balance it with the rest of the scheme in minimalistic white with pine-hued cabinetry,” says Vaid.
A bar area next to the kitchen is a colourful, inviting space accentuated with pictures, greenery and a well-stocked bar. “We decided to decorate the wall above the bar console with pictures of the couple’s travels. The bright yellow chair was used to inject a fun vibe into the vignette,” Vaid says.

The master bedroom is a bright space enriched with a blue-green and grey palette. “This vibrant wallpaper helps lift the look and feel of the space. Keeping the wallpaper bold, we decided to do a tone-on-tone colour palette on the bedding,” Vaid says.

The big windows let in ample sunlight and the white walls help make the room look larger.
The blue-green theme continues from the bedroom into the bathroom. “Since the clients wanted either a burst of colour or pattern in every room, we decided to make the bathroom a more rustic-looking space with the distressed-style wall tiles. The vanity in veneer was made on site,” Vaid says.

The den area serves multiple purposes – it is used as a space for relaxing, reading or napping. “The couple also use this room as an extended space when guests visit. The day bed offers extra seating; it can be pulled out and used as a guest bed as well,” Vaid says. The neutral palette of the room is punctured by the striped carpet and bright cushions. “Since we’d used the concept of frames on walls aplenty in the house, we decided to use a cycle installation here,” Vaid says.

The den area is also accentuated with a large bright chair; the windows and neutral curtains ensure the space is always well-lit and airy.

This city apartment of a busy young couple is furnished with pops of colour, patterns and their own personal finds – the minimal furniture keeps the space looking large and airy. “We changed the overall tiling of the home – the developer provided vitrified flooring, which was changed to textured 2x2 Nitco tiles. In the living-cum-dining area, we didn’t want to go overboard with large, bulky, furniture pieces, since the space is small. In the dining space, we used a convertible table that can be pulled out and made into a six-seater,” Vaid says.
