Advertising professionals Toral Mawani and Danish Khan approached Purple Backyard to transform their high-rise Bandra apartment into “a refreshing getaway from the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle”. “They wanted to share the joy of their home with family and friends and desired nothing less than the finest,” says Kumpal Vaid of Purple Backyard. Vaid, who had worked with them previously, chose white as an all-pervading tone, with depth created through the layering of materials and textures, all coming together to produce a series of chic transitional spaces. The entire space is well-lit, naturally ventilated and open to the outdoors from most rooms.

The stunning entrance in the Art Deco style with its symmetry of geometric lines and graceful curves, is a precursor of things to come within.
One enters the vast living space that sports an all-white palette, blessed with lots of natural light and ventilation, thanks to full-height doors that open into a balcony running the length of the room. The space is designed with multiple clusters of seating that can be used depending on mood and activity. Vaid says, “The living area is reminiscent of a tasteful Manhattan lounge with its transitional mix of casual and formal seating, and curated conversation pieces.”

The muted colours that set the tone for the entire home are reflected not only in the furniture and artwork but also in the marble flooring and the white raftered ceiling. The marble floor is sporadically interspersed with sections of cleverly placed mosaic tiles that break up the uniformity of a plain floor.

A ‘community table’ at one end of the living room is the home’s pièce de résistance. Vaid says, “With its striking rose-quartz cornerstone and comfortable bar chairs that make a statement with their varied finishes, the table is an all-out show stopper.”
The lighting for this area, indeed for the whole house, has been created by Purple Backyard in collaboration with Harshita Jhamtani designs. This particular series of pendants over the long table (and over the one beyond) are made of assorted bare frames and reflect the whimsical vibe of the home.

The formal dining area comprises chairs in dusty pink that adds subtle colour to the prevailing neutral scheme, echoing the mood of the cornerstone of the community table.

The wall art installation behind the dining has been inspired by the waxing and waning phases of the moon and explores clay as a material for lights.
Yet another nook in the living room is made up of a pair of sleek arm chairs in stone-print upholstery. Bright-orange twin lamps inject the corner with a strong dose of colour that is echoed in the artwork.

A cushy chair in the corner beside the ‘community table’ makes for a cosy spot for a cuppa. It’s hard to tell, but the tone-on-tone brick-finish panels behind the long table camouflage a fully equipped bar.
With a pull of two levers, the bar appears in all its tropical glory, instantly switching up the mood and aesthetic of the room. Vaid says, “It is a sight to behold, especially as the sun sets and the pink-purple hues bounce off the balcony deck and hit the spectacular birds-of-paradise wallpaper, bringing out its many colours.”

The master bed has a grand wooden frame that has an outdoorsy look and feel. Transitional wall lamps, while being practical, serve as accents to elevate the overall ambience. The bedroom comes across as country at first, but on further inspection, nautical and contemporary elements show themselves, all tied together seamlessly into a transitional whole.
The guest bedroom features a candy terrazzo flooring with a pair of colonial-style beds. The exaggerated mosaic-tiled floor and the chic armchair bring retro vibes to the mix and complete the space.

The marble-tiled bathroom does not veer from the overall tone of the house. Brass fittings and warm-glow filament bulbs introduce a touch of brightness to relieve to the muted palette.
The kitchen sports an off-white concrete finish, while the backsplash brightens up the space with orange beehive-patterned tiles.
