Houzz Tour: Powder-Puff Colours Make This a Dreamlike Home
Antique furniture, wooden flooring and soft pastel colours make for a striking Bangalore home
“At first, the clients were very keen on a home inspired by Indian folk elements. After several meetings with us and post some of their personal travels, they realised that the concept they had in mind would be incongruous with the classical architecture of their home. After much deliberation, they were convinced about a neo-classical, mid-century modern design with an English appeal,” says Farah Ahmed, co-founder of Fadd Studio, which designed this home in Bangalore.

The ceiling reflects silver leaf work that emulates tin tiles and is accentuated by the flowing lines of a chain chandelier. “We also decided to keep the shell warm and neutral with cornice detailing on the walls,” Ahmed says.
The foyer leads to the kitchen-cum-dining area on its right and the living room on its left. The ground floor also houses a guest room. The first floor has another living room and the master bedroom; the level above has the son’s room.

“People in India prefer dark or bright wall colours,” Shellugar says. “To give the home an English-inspired look, we chose muted tones and interspersed the area with lots of white and pastel accessories and furniture. We also chose wooden flooring in most areas. With a combination of pastels and fine detailing, this home is truly a breath of fresh air.”
The living room has a Chesterfield-inspired white sofa. A pair of coral armchairs, a customised daybed and stools provide comfortable seating. The centre table is made of wood and accentuated with pastel flowers. “Art by Naina Kulkarni was chosen to suit the bold, colourful blind behind the sofa,” Ahmed says.

“The clients wanted a grand home, but one they could be comfortable living in, without it having a show-home vibe. We aimed to give them just that,” Ahmed says.
The space has an open-plan feel to it – the living area leads into an expansive space that contains the dining area as well as the kitchen.

The kitchen-cum-dining room is the only area that has patterned vintage floor tiles. “Placed here is an old rosewood Chettinad table and eight chairs sourced from a local antiques store. The table was repainted in soft colours by local artist Aarti Karwayun,” Shellugar says. A distressed side table and white-painted doors and columns around the area contribute to the overall classic design of the home. A hint of contrast is brought in by two dark-shaded lights over the dining table.

“The teal-toned, straight-lined kitchen features artworks from the client’s personal collection,” Ahmed says. There is a casual diner-style seating area along a wall. Diagonally set tiles lend visual depth to this area.
The guest room on the ground floor follows the home’s design theme – wooden flooring, grey-beige walls “and a teal-toned bed which faces a cupboard reflecting a medley of wallpapers,” Ahmed says. Floor-to-ceiling windows with neutral-toned blinds blend with the colours of the room.
“The staircase, with solid wooden steps and white railings, was another important English-style feature brought into the space,” Shellugar says. Each landing on all the floors is embellished with panels that display small pictures of the family.
“In the living room on the first floor, we have tried to bring in a sense of understated elegance through the use of soft colours paired with beige-grey walls,” Shellugar says. The centre table is made of metal and cement. A triptych of artwork, made with old wood, door handles and latches, graces the wall above the extensive seating at the far end of this expansive space. In the foreground, two paintings take centrestage. All these works of art was sourced from Montage Art in Bangalore.
This floor also houses the master bedroom. “This bedroom is drenched in olive, beige and grey shades,” Ahmed says. The white chequered headboard and the sleek tables blend in with the clean, subtle design scheme of the room. Most of the bedroom furniture has been custom-made.

As a counterpoint to the spare and neutral tone of this space, the wall on the other side of the master bedroom is covered in a customised wallpaper: a rich perspective of arches in a European palace. A chair and a floor lamp have been placed to create an ideal nook for some quiet time.

“The ivory-hued master bathroom has customised wooden shelving,” Shellugar says. The only pop of colour is provided by the rug.
On the second floor is the son’s bedroom, bathed in blues and greens. “The bunk bed and the study were custom-made in wood and painted a bright blue colour,” Ahmed says. The cartoon-print rug shares the same tones as the furniture.

Back on the ground floor, the living room opens out to an outdoor patio. This space has patchwork tiles and hand-painted furniture. On its periphery is a garden with a water body and an open lawn for entertaining.

“As you enter the three-level home, you are welcomed into a grey-beige toned foyer. The double-height foyer, with an oversized arched mirror, makes for an impactful entrance. The long, white curtains allow ample light to stream in, ensuring a bright but soft interior,” Shellugar says.
