A young couple with two children invited Jasem Pirani and Huzefa Rangwala, co-founders and chief interior designers of MuseLAB, to give their suburban apartment a cosmetic overhaul.
“The brief was to create a modern and minimalist design that balances aesthetics and functionality. We offset the neutral shell with a soft and feminine colour palette and reimagined the transition portals with half-keyhole arches. We kept the layout functional, simple and airy,” says Pirani.

“It was essential to establish a dominant colour and material palette that could recur throughout the apartment. White walls, birch- and beech-wood furniture, and pops of sunshine yellow, blue and blush pink are overarching themes,” says Rangwala. The floor’s mirror-like sheen brightens and expands the space.
The dining room serves as the heart of the home and is separated from the living area by an asymmetrical half-keyhole archway.

In the dining area, a rectangular dining table, flanked by a tufted violet bench on one side and wooden chairs on the others, takes centre stage.
“The dining room is bookended by two asymmetrical keyhole arches. These were designed to allow for eye contact with the living room, kitchen and bedrooms, while also providing for a layer of privacy,” says Pirani.

The kitchen channels a moss-green palette. A row of wood-toned cupboards provides an organic contrast to the forest-inspired cabinetry.
High-polish herringbone tiles compose the backsplash, providing a gleaming offset to the matte cabinetry.

The master bedroom is dominated by a palette of wood and slate grey. A fawn headboard anchors the slumber area.
The wardrobes sport dual-toned facades with disc handles in various sizes.
Opposite the bed is a sweeping workstation crowned by an open bookshelf.
“The furniture was all custom-designed to complement the Scandinavian aesthetic of the home,” says Rangwala.

Cobalt and blue tiles characterise the master bathroom, running across the walls and floor, as well as the washbasin shell.
A storage unit underpins the washbasin, its circular, disc-like handles a familiar feature echoing those in the bedroom.

The daughter’s bedroom is a melange of pastel hues. The checked lavender headboard nods to the purple vanity storage units, while a rose-toned wardrobe stands to the left of the bed. An open display unit stands above the slumber zone, hosting an assortment of tchotchkes.

A workstation lines the wall opposite the bed.
Sunshine yellow and cloudy grey rule the colour scheme in the son’s bedroom. A timber-toned trundle bed is flanked by an L-shaped workstation to the right. Half- and quarter-moon handles dot the wardrobes and storage units, recalling the style of the living room.

In the son’s ensuite bathroom, azure tiles connect the wall and floor in a single definitive sweep. A wood-framed mirror lends an organic touch to the bold expanse of colour.
