Mumbai Houzz: A Suburban Oasis With a Meditation Den at Its Heart
A transitional decor scheme and a Zen zone transform this home by Purple Backyard into an idyllic retreat
The homeowners wanted a comfortable home with a special meditation room: a space where they could relax, rejuvenate and find repose. Keeping this brief in mind, Kumpal Vaid, founder and principal designer of Purple Backyard, suggested a transitional design scheme for the apartment, where every element would hold its own. She created the perfect-imperfect oasis the homeowners desired by blending textures, colours and furnishings.
“The blue sofa anchors the living room with a coffee table that doubles as a collaborative work desk for the kids, or even grown-ups, when needed. Metal wall lights in black make for the perfect wall highlighters,” says Vaid.
Next to the dining table is the glass-enclosed meditation room, which also serves as the media room. The designer carved out this space by converting the pantry and utility area. Neutral tones of wood and clean lines give a natural and seamless flow to the design narrative.

According to Vaid, the meditation room is the pièce de résistance of this apartment. It has a Zen-like vibe, with wooden flooring and a Buddha artefact . A cosy couch and media station convert it into a great spot to unwind.
This corner in the meditation room merges traditional and contemporary decor with a classic floral-patterned wallpaper and industrial rope hanging lamp.
Panelled glass sectionalises the meditation room from the dining table without restricting views or light.

Small decorative plants inject doses of green and amplify the vibe of an oasis. Rose pendant lights offset the rustic mirror frame to reinforce the transitional interior style.
Next to the dining table is a boho-chic book cabinet. Its woody tones provide a sense of continuity to the decor.
The functional galley kitchen has a clean-lined contemporary setup. Natural light from the window floods the kitchen to give it a brighter and more open feel.

In the master bedroom, the wall behind the bed is adorned with a family collage that breathes a warm sense of handmade art, while edgy industrial lamps balance the arrangement. Natural light fills this bedroom and induces a happy mood.
This bare wall gets a lift from the cheery vibes of the turquoise artwork.
“For the daughter’s room, the idea was to keep it fresh and open. We opted for a foldable bed so the children would have ample floor and wall space for play. Sticking art on the wall lends a personalised aesthetic to the room,” says Vaid.
Pops of candy hues are dotted through the room, such as the white-and-peach colour pairing on the wardrobe. Soft moulding on the doors adds delicate detailing and creates visual interest.
These drawers and open shelves offer adequate storage, along with an integrated study table, for keeping the children’s books, craft materials, stationery and projects.
“The guest bedroom is lined with many traditional pieces bought from flea markets in Kolkata. They were retouched to give a new look that blended well with the overall house, yet retaining a strong sense of individuality which would make any guest feel welcome and cared for,” says Vaid.

The entrance opens into a transitional style living room. The decor here is a confluence of traditional and modern furniture, furnishing and materials, which are brought together harmoniously to create a cohesive design. In this living room, the warm tones of mango wood juxtapose the pops of vibrant colour from the sofa and artwork to create an inviting space.
