For Mayur Mangukiya and Ankit Sojitra, designing this Surat bungalow was an intriguing exercise in shapes. “This abode is designed longitudinally, as a simple rectangle, on a narrow plot of 24 x 56 feet. We were tasked with magnifying the natural light within the home, and had to innovate within the limited footprint,” say the cofounders and chief interior designers of Studio 17.

The main door leads into the living room, where a minimal material and colour palette prevails. The seating area injects deep olive and camel tones into the subdued surroundings.
“The clients were adamant about keeping things simple. Where the shell is pared back, the accents compensate. The aesthetic is largely inspired by the shapes as depicted in the Bindu art series by S.H. Raza,” explains Sojitra.

An open display unit divides the kitchen from the living room. Defined by a double-height volume, the chamber receives an abundance of sunlight from the skylight overhead.

Black marble-like finishes and the grain of deep-hued wood serve as subtle sun-catchers.
The grey squares of the checkerboard-style skylight are marked with the circles of pendant lamps, iterating the design language of the house.
“Since we wanted to pre-empt hindered lighting from the sides of the home, we decided to incorporate a skylight. The skylight maximises the natural light and lets out the hot air. It also ensures proper air circulation, as the kitchen occupies the centre of the house. From the kitchen, you can see the inward-looking, mirror-image balconies of the two first-floor bedrooms,” Mangukiya elaborates.
Black and wood-toned walls, contrasted with a scheme of yellow dots and chevrons, cocoon the ground-floor bedroom. “The shapes nod to the overarching Bindu-inspired aesthetic of the home,” notes Sojitra.

Cement oxide walls lend a rustic edge to the staircase, which connects the ground and first floors.
The two bedrooms on the first floor flank the double-height volume above the kitchen and are situated in perfect symmetry.
A grey-and-white shell provides a calming environment in the second bedroom. Circular forms make a reappearance in keeping with the home’s thematic language.
“The use of colour is restrained, appearing only in the form of accents,” says Mangukiya.

The second bedroom has an ensuite wardrobe and bathroom clad in charcoal finishes.
The pale-grey flooring and walls of the third bedroom are reminiscent of the previous bedroom. The tufted brown headboard delivers a solid block of colour against the understated backdrop.
“The two upstairs bedrooms feature similar hushed, serene palettes. While the previous room has a gorgeous window view, this one has been bestowed with a deck,” says Sojitra.

“The home is likely to be obstructed by neighbouring properties in the future, restricting ventilation and lighting. We, therefore, resorted to welcoming light from the front, in the way of spacious balconies,” says Mangukiya.
