Ganesh Nair, principal designer at Whitespace says, “The clients wanted a functional, homely, low-maintenance, uncluttered home that looked aesthetically stunning at the same time.” In response to the brief, the firm went with warm colours, mingled with bursts of brightness either in the form of accessories or accent pieces. Typical European colours like sea-foam green and teal blue dominate the palette, while brick walls, patterned tiles and louvred windows provide ample texture and pattern. Most of the furniture has been built to specific requirements. The end product is a warm home full of character and style, which is easy to live in.

The foyer is lined on the left with a wooden cabinet and display shelf with beautiful little louvred shutters – a motif that is interspersed through the house.

On the opposite side stands a tropical-style carved-wood console paired with a sun-frame mirror, offering a welcoming touch. The floor has a geometric pattern that distinguishes the foyer from the living space.
The foyer leads to a living room bathed in natural light streaming in from the adjoining balcony.
The standout feature in the living room is a full-height display shelf painted in bold blue that adds a dramatic touch to the space. The furniture is earthy and warm, interspersed with cheery orange accent chairs.
The room exudes a marine vibe thanks to the blue shelves and the diamond-patterned blue-and-white rug.
A similarly coloured large built-in buffet counter with a bar unit stands on the opposite end of the room, behind the dining table. A large wooden beam visually separates the living and dining spaces in an otherwise open floor plan.
Wrought-iron furniture in turquoise blue and a patterned floor (replicated from the lobby) make for a pretty Mediterranean-inspired balcony, completed by the ceiling-height vertical garden. The plants bring a much-needed splash of living nature that draws attention away from the urban landscape.
The semi-open kitchen came about as a ‘via-media’ to accommodate the lady of the house’s wish for privacy and the husband’s for an open kitchen. The wall dividing the living room and the kitchen was torn down and replaced with a wooden unit with a mix of some open shelves and some with louvred screens, to allow some visual connection without invading the kitchen’s privacy.
Nair says, “As the challenge was to make a small kitchen appear spacious, we made structural and visual changes to stretch the space both horizontally and vertically.” He did this by using white on all the work surfaces, splashbacks and walls, and using a strong pattern on the entire kitchen floor. This brings visual continuity, and carries the eye up and around, making the space appear larger.
Sea-foam-green pull-outs paired with wooden cabinets, and monochrome tiles on the floor give the kitchen a colourful yet earthy and elegant look.

The master bedroom sports a “spa-style teak bed, a study table from Jaipur and a cosy window seat that overlooks swathes of greenery, giving the space an earthy, ethnic look.” Wood cladding on the beam and a sliver of brick wall add warmth and texture to the space.

Stucco walls behind the bed and sea-foam-green ceiling-height wardrobes with louvred panels on some of the doors gives the room a dash of colour and loads of personality.
The daughter’s bedroom sports a sophisticated yet playful look with plaid-pattern wallpaper behind a four-poster bed that is paired with antique gold lights and an overhead industrial-style light.
A long wooden study table on one side overlooks the sights and sounds of the Aarey forest, a welcome distraction from long bouts of studying.
