Nashik Houzz: This Apartment is a Lesson in Small Space Living
The J studio employs colour, customised furniture and other space-boosting ideas to enhance this compact home
Houzz at a Glance
Who lives here: A young couple and their two-year-old child
Location: Nashik, Maharashtra
Year/decade built: 2021
Size: 75 square metres (800 square feet); 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms
Design firm: the J studio
Photos by: Manish Malli Photography
The homeowners had only one wish – “a very simple and airy interior considering the small size of the apartment”. This gave the J studio a free hand to maximise every square foot of possible space in the house and use it to its fullest potential. The designers eschewed cluttering the space with small furniture pieces, used neutral colours to take advantage of the ample natural light the flat was endowed with, and “added an element of quirk via wallpapers and colour and patterned furnishings”.

The main door opens directly into the living room via a tiny foyer. The wall at the entrance sports white fluted panels with niches that hold decorative objects.
The fluted panel wraps around the corner to hold a floating console and a television above it. The colour palette is neutral, in shades of pale grey and beige.

Pops of colour are introduced through colourful cushions and vibrant green plants. The walls were kept white so that maximum day light is reflected.
A balcony that is a constant source of natural light abuts the living room. Full-length neutral-hued drapes that draw the eye upwards visually enlarge the room.

The dining area, while being an immediate part of the living room, is cosy and distinctive, highlighted with customised wallpaper that lifts the otherwise muted tones of the house.

To counter the space constraints, the designers introduced single multi-functional pieces. So, the TV unit extends into a bench for the dining table.

A pair of minimalist chairs with wooden legs and leather seats make up the rest of the seating at the table.
Down the passage beyond the dining space lie the bedrooms, the first being the guest bedroom. The couple wanted a space which would not be completely taken up by the bed, given the small size of the room. The multi-functional unit with a daybed and wardrobe fits neatly into that scheme.
A pull-out converts the daybed into a proper bed and, when rolled in, makes ample space for other activities.
The child’s room is done up in an outer-space theme. The platform bed is tucked close to the window, which gives more floor space in order to incorporate a study and extended storage next to the bed.
The master bedroom has a cosy vibe to it, with muted textures and dark accents to create a balance. Floating bedside tables feel light and airy, as does the single glass globe light fixture – all elements that enhance a small space.
The small study table made up of a ledge tucked beside the wardrobe was a
