Mumbai Houzz: The Most Warm & Inviting Home You'll Ever See
ns*a Architecture and Interiors redesigned this apartment to maximise open spaces and minimise visual clutter
A modern and welcoming home was the brief given to Neesha Alwani and Shruti Jalan, co-founders of ns*a Architecture and Interiors, by the homeowners. The family members are busy professionals, so they wanted to make the most of their time together at home. They also entertain often. Keeping this in mind, the team redesigned the apartment to offer the right balance of comfort and sophistication.
At the other end is the second seating space, with a grey-and-black sofa arranged in an L shape. Plenty of natural light gives this spot a bright and cheery feel. The mustard lounge chair brings in a sun-kissed vibe.
“A low-lying black console at the bottom of the veneer panelling houses the music system and other equipment. The wall-to-wall window floods the living and dining areas with natural light and allows ventilation,” Alwani says.
“The walls of the living and dining room are dressed in oak-wood panelling with bold grooves. The white ceiling and Makrana marble floor with black diagonal veins offer a neutral palette for the furniture and art,” Shruti Jalan adds.
“Behind the sofa, an artwork in shades of grey and pale blue offers a dramatic backdrop. A black-and-white custom-made bar cabinet stands tall between the two seating areas.”
The shorter arm of the L-shaped living room also houses the dining table with ribbed wood panelling as the backdrop. A part of the older utility room was incorporated into the living area to accommodate space for dining. Wooden chairs with greyish-blue velvet upholstery and a marble tabletop add vibrancy to the decor.
“A wooden console with perforated brass shutters divides the dining and living area. The cluster of globe hanging lights ups the glam quotient,” says Jalan.

Like the rest of the apartment, the kitchen floor is white marble. It is offset by charcoal-grey textured wall tiles and pearl-brown granite on the countertop. The oak-wood laminate brings in warmth and softens the decor.

Large windows fill this master bedroom with ample light and brilliant views. Oak-wood side tables and a low cane chair soften the ambience. The same Makrana marble flooring is used across the house.
“Both bedrooms are in muted tones of white, oak, beige and brown,“ says Alwani.

In the second bedroom, the leather headboard complements the oak panelling on the wall. Framed art on the wall gives colourful relief from the neutral browns.
“We designed the bedrooms with wardrobes along one side, to resemble wall panelling. This allowed the area to seem more open and clutter-free. The wardrobe shutters are a combination of fluted beige back-painted glass and veneer with black handles,” says Jalan. “The fluted surface of the glass offers an interesting texture to the large expanse of wardrobe shutters. An oakwood niche with open drawers breaks this monotony.”
“The house as a whole has an easy flow which represents our design philosophy of having a calm balance in our spaces. The neutral palette of materials is constant in every room,” says Alwani.

“The apartment comprises a living room, dining room, two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a kitchen and service areas,” says Neesha Alwani. “In the older layout, the living and dining were arranged linearly with narrow openings and high window sills. We redesigned the apartment according to the brief given by the homeowners.”As one enters the apartment, there is an entrance corridor that is flanked by a ribbed wood-panelled wall on the left.
There are two seating areas at the opposite ends of the L-shaped living room. One end of the room has a cosy sofa upholstered in deep-blue chenille fabric, with two lounge chairs in salmon-pink chenille. The floor-to-ceiling window overlooks the Arabian Sea and brings in spectacular views and natural light.
