Perched on the twenty-third floor of a high-rise, this New Delhi home is equal parts natural light, Scandinavian minimalism and refined luxury.
“The client wanted well-finished, luxurious interiors with a modern Scandinavian look and feel, a combination that seemed almost paradoxical at first. They were keen on maximising the natural light that the apartment affords while restraining the colour palette to monochrome touches,” says Ekta Khanna, founder and chief interior designer of Ekta Khanna Design Studio.

The informal section is a mellow counterpoint to the formal area, with light walls, pops of verdure and casual seating in two dusty-green velvet chairs. A white shadowbox-style shelving unit backdrops the setting.
“The shelving unit channels a true Scandinavian vibe. It serves as a display surface for the clients’ numerous mementos and artefacts collected from their travels around the world,” Khanna says.

To the left of the foyer, and adjacent to the living spaces, the dining area boasts a six-seater extendable dining table with a white ceramic top. White and brown leather upholstery clads the dining chairs, whose curvilinear forms offset the straight lines of the table.

A white sideboard complements the table setting, while a deep-blue rug adds a softening tactile element to the surrounding hard surfaces. The ceiling, sporting deep-toned ceiling panels, plays host to a trio of copper-toned and white globe pendants.
“The dining room serves as a gateway to the bedrooms and kitchen. Thus, we incorporated a slatted wood ceiling to give the space more definition. The dining table is dynamic, accommodating up to eight people when required,” says Khanna.

A wallpapered passageway, anchored by a vanity topped with black marble, leads into the master bedroom. A large round mirror dominates the layout.
The master bedroom features a combination of ash-grey, blush-pink and lavender elements. A hexagon-patterned wallpaper backdrops the slumber area, providing foil to the dark-grey and walnut bed. A pale-pink linen armchair occupies the corner of the room.
“All the bedrooms have adjoining balconies that conjure an open, airy and bright appeal,” notes Khanna.

The mother’s bedroom is the smallest room in the house. A pared-back shell prevails, with the only manifestation of colour in the way of a navy velvet headboard. Wooden slats and a modern pichwai-inspired painting highlight the wall behind the bed.
The son’s bedroom is dominated by a charcoal and grey palette. Dark-grey panels clad the wall behind the bed, acting as a complementary backdrop to the olive-grey leather headboard. A slim white study table, with a matching overhead bookshelf, flanks the bed to the right.

The home’s prevailing dark palette is perpetuated in the powder room in the form of matte black wall tiles and Moroccan-inspired floor tiles.

“Most of the house features a monochromatic palette, and grey is a recurrent theme across the walls and furniture. To counterbalance the brooding colour scheme in the living area, we kept the flooring to a cream marble. The doors are finished in light walnut-stained oak veneer, while the frames star a dark polish,” says Khanna.
