Houzz Tour: An Upside Down Mumbai Home
Large public spaces and fun breakout areas knits together the plan of this abode with an inverted layout
“The clients wanted a place that is warm, inviting, spacious and airy. They love to entertain large groups of people and wanted many areas in the house where they could do so. So our design explored a sync between inside and outside spaces for socialising, not only for the look but for the experience it creates. It is very special to have a home that can provide peace and tranquility to the owners and guests in a busy city like Mumbai,” Aditi Vora Nair, founder of AVN Interiors, says.
This two-level penthouse in a high-rise has a reverse layout – the upper floor contains all the public areas (dining room, kitchen, terrace, bar, guest room and living room) and the lower level downstairs has all the bedrooms.

The living room is awash in neutral greys and off-whites that make this room look large and airy. “We have used lots of glass, wood, marble and concrete around the house, too,” Nair says.

Across the entrance lobby from the living room is the bar-cum-sun lounge. “The bar features a wooden counter and clear glass windows. The living room, dining room, bar-lounge, terrace, kitchen and guest room are large and comfortable, designed in a way that people can easily socialise,” Nair says.
Next to the bar-lounge is the terrace. “For the sun lounge, we custom-designed a glazed structure inspired by French architecture, with tall windows allowing ample light to filter in. The roof, 14 feet high, is finished with zinc cladding on the outside and exposed wood on the inside,” Nair says.
Next to the living and dining space is the all-white kitchen. “This modular space features wooden cabinets and built-in appliances,” Nair says.
Outside the kitchen is the dining area with pristine white walls and glossy finishes. Pendant lights, vibrant artwork, accessories and a wood-framed mirror bring in restrained glamour to the crisp, clean-lined space. The grey wall here is the hidden powder room. The same wall continues down to the master bedroom.
“Right opposite the dining area is a staircase that goes down to the lower floor where the master bedroom and the daughter’s room are located. A huge art piece adorns the suspended staircase and the double-height area is enhanced with concrete cladding connecting both the floors,” Nair says.
The gallery leading to the master bedroom has a life-sized artwork and a floor-to-ceiling mirror lining its two walls, and a hidden, built-in shoe rack.
“The master bedroom is a large, clutter-free, woody space with two red chairs and a high ceiling,” Nair says. The area exudes warmth, with the use of dark grey wall made of concrete sheets that contrast with the brown of the floor.

“The master bath is an open layout with only glazed cubicles for the shower and WC. The wardrobes are custom designed in leather and wood cladding,” Nair says.
“The daughter’s room is done in a cool colour palette of white, turquoise, sea green, blue and grey,” Nair says. A large window overlooks the bed and provides lots of natural light during the day.
The attached bathroom has a dark-toned interior and contains a large tub and mirror. “This space is exclusively designed in bronze Armani,” Nair says.

The entrance lobby on the upper floor leads, on one side, to the part of the house with an outdoors connect: the bar lounge, and beyond that the sun deck and the terrace. On the other side, it opens to the real indoors: the living and dining area, powder room, guest room and kitchen.
