Perched on the fortieth floor of a luxury high-rise, this swish pied-à-terre offers unending vistas of the skyline and the Arabian Sea.

“As NRIs, the clients had purchased a 3-BHK apartment in a prominent Mumbai high-rise, to have a home to return to when they were in India. Any home in Mumbai with a view like this exemplifies luxury. This is what inspired the design language, with rich materials, bold patterns and elegant decor taking centre stage,” says Shilpa Jain Balvally, p
rincipal architect and co-founder of Studio Osmosis.

Adds Sameer Balvally, p
rincipal architect and co-founder with Shilpa, “The clients found us on Houzz and reached out to us with a clear-cut brief. While the original layout had three bedrooms, they wanted to convert it into a swanky 2-BHK.”

The main door opens into a mirror-panelled foyer, anchored by an antique brass finished SS metal, resin and leather detailed screen. The screen offers glimpses of the living room beyond.

The living room is defined by a curvilinear wall veiled by sheer curtains. The seating area, arranged in a U-shaped layout, channels the room’s dominant palette of taupe, greige and cream. A quadrant-style coffee table shelters four stools underneath, allowing for quick, easy seating for bonus guests.

“The tower interiors were designed by Armani Casa. We wanted to preserve the original aesthetic while taking the drama quotient a few notches higher. In this vein, we chose hushed colours, antique metallic finishes, custom-designed detailed furniture with rich, elegant fabrics and fabric cladding with metal inlay along with custom lighting to enhance the sense of space. The variations of blue are emblematic of the proximity to the ocean and serve to add a sense of calm within the house,” says Shilpa.

Opposite the seating area, a gilt-trellised wall plays host to the television.

The living area flows on into the dining area, characterised by a wooden resin-detailed lazy-Susan (carousel) table and fawn chairs. A contemporary glass chandelier by ST Unicom tops the setting, giving the dining space a glamorous glitter.

“When turned on, the dining-table carousel lights up, illuminating the emblazoned resin pattern from underneath,” notes Sameer.

The semi-open kitchen is designed to be a fluid extension of the living and dining areas.

A breakfast counter defines the kitchen entrance, offering a place for intimate family moments over coffee and conversation.

The ornamental screen (of the foyer) separates the living room from a long corridor leading to the bedrooms.

“The corridor disconnects the private spaces from the common areas. The bedroom doors feature a backlit resin-on-wood pattern. The collective effect makes the corridor the undisputed showstopper of the home,” Shilpa says.

The master bedroom is ruled by woodland tones, by way of the wood-panelled walls, pale turquoise carpet, tufted Taupe wall panel and an earth-toned bench. A tufted cream wall panel backgrounds the bed, serving as the room’s focal point.

“The bedroom achieves a balance between high-gloss and textured finishes. The polished veneers are offset by the carpet; the patterns, by neutral blocks of colour. The aesthetic combines comfort and elegance,” says Shilpa.

An identical tufted panel adorns the wall opposite the bed, backing a wall-mounted television.

The wall behind the headboard acts as a subtle partition to the walk-in closet, which can be accessed at the right of the bed and ends into the bathroom with bathroom inlay.

The guest bedroom is cloaked in soft colours and tactile surfaces. An upholstered panelled wall with gilded joints embellishes one wall, highlighting the brown ridged headboard in the foreground. The bed is flanked by sculptural lunar-esque chandeliers that lend a metallic shine to the matte shell. A taupe-grey shaded carpet sheaths the floor, while the wardrobes are patterned with a coffee-coloured diamond motif.

Opposite the bed, a matrix partition serves a dual purpose – as a sleek television unit, and as a divider to an alcove fitted with bunk beds.

“That such bedrooms in a Mumbai home are entirely clad in carpet is a story worth telling. The client was keen on carpeting the entire house, but for practical reasons, we recommended keeping it to the bedrooms. We cycled through several samples and iterations before settling on a design that added life and colour, without overwhelming the aesthetic,” says Sameer.

In the guest bathroom, an evolving pattern of black and coffee diamonds unfurls across the wall and floor. Camel-hued stone adorns one wall, injecting a burst of warmth into the geometric theme.
