For architects Ashish Patel, Nikhil Patel and Nilesh Dalsania, and interior designer Vasudev Sheta, of Ace Associates, the brief of this home called for a contemporary spirit with a distinctly Indian heart. “As a multigenerational home to a family of six, our main challenge lay in coalescing the interests of the family into a singular design language. We tailored each room to echo the personalities of its occupants, while keeping the common areas true to the family’s collective ethos,” says Ashish.

The main gate opens into a parking area, which, in turn, leads into a voluminous courtyard embellished by a central water body. An automated retractable roof extends over the courtyard on sultry days.

“The courtyard is visible from all the spaces within the home, and poses as its hero piece,” says Ashish.

A sleek set of steps leads visitors through a porch to the main door of the residence. The porch exudes a tony air with its polished wood-clad ceiling and soft recessed lighting.

“The exterior entryway acts as a prelude to the home interior,” says Ashish.

Inside, to the left, is the living room, ruled by a greige palette and wooden walls and flooring. The inward-facing seating arrangement, composed of beige sofas, takes pride of place in the centre, anchored by an ornamental area rug. Adjacent floor-to-ceiling windows offer generous vistas of the garden beyond, creating a seamless connect to the outdoors.

“The material palette includes non-reflective matte tiling and natural-grain wood, which serve as a conducive canvas for natural light. One can actually perceive the crispness of the sunlight as it falls at different hours of the day,” shares Ashish.

Directly opposite the main door is the dining room, with an internal courtyard as backdrop. A circular stone dining table and upholstered chairs take centre stage, overarched by a wood-panelled suspended ceiling hosting globular metallic pendants.

The internal courtyard acts as the home’s axis, cohesively connecting various floors and spaces. Embellished with azure tiles and a burnished bronze-toned statuette, “it channels a Varanasi ghat (a riverside flight of steps) vibe.”

To the right of the dining room is a bijou puja room. A scripture-inscribed tablet, framed by foliated wallpaper, forms the shrine. Beneath it, a sweeping wooden console, holding sacred idols and photographs, stands before a pair of low stools that provide seating for prayer.

A passage partitions the dining room from the family den, situated away from the common areas for added privacy. A television presides over the room, while abstract paintings, bright upholstery and tactile finishes collide in a cornucopia of colour and vibrancy.

“The bungalow houses artefacts, pictures, paintings and sculptures curated by us. The gallery-wall-esque artwork in the family den offers a glimpse into this collection,” explains Ashish.

The passage culminates in a semi-enclosed patio with a slatted roof. Blue-and-white herringbone-style flooring enriches the plain-vanilla surroundings, blossoming into a pebble-filled alcove enlivened by a colourful swing. Behind it, a feature wall with teardrop-shaped openings injects visual variety into the otherwise muted aesthetic, offering glimpses of the garden beyond.

A switchback staircase, situated to the left of the internal courtyard, leads observers to an L-shaped lobby on the first floor.

Here, oversized studio lights direct observers to the feature wall on the right, where a series of sculptural mudras (hand gestures) tell a compelling story.

“This floor comprises the family’s bedrooms,” says Ashish.

A Mediterranean leitmotif with coastal-inspired colours characterises the younger son’s bedroom. A driftwood-style wooden deck, outfitted with shadow box shelves and a swing chair, skirts the window.

In the centre, a four-poster canopy bed with a cobalt-upholstered headboard takes pride of place, complemented by a matching tufted bench at the foot of the bed. Behind the bed, a white exposed brick wall echoes the rugged charm of the blue-wash cement floor, recalling the landscape of the Adriatic coastline.

The en-suite bathroom breathes island-style vibes, courtesy an indigo coved ceiling, a pebble-strewn vignette and handcrafted embellishments. A Mediterranean backsplash steals the limelight, recalling ocean blues.

The third room, reserved for recreation, personifies a riveting card game. King-size playing cards compose the feature wall, tipping their hat to the complementary cushions just below. An array of vivid modular benches skirts the bed, morphing their layout to suit the occasion.

“The room is used to play cards and host gatherings,” says Ashish.

In the older son’s bedroom, a palette of ochre, mustard and beige rules the rustic aesthetic, while a triptych of violet blinds highlights the window scheme.

An overhead exposed bulb chandelier takes on an unfussy, industrial-chic avatar, staying true to the room’s grungy form.

The bedroom connects to an en-suite walk-in closet that perpetuates its organic colour scheme. A glass partition divides the two spaces, visually expanding the bedroom by blurring the boundaries in between.

The master bedroom, located at the tail end of the passage, is steeped in roseate hues and foliated motifs. Wooden panels adorn the wall behind the headboard, while custom wallpapers accent the walls on either side. Decidedly ethnic elements, incarnated by mythology-inspired accent pillows, a paisley-print rug and ornamental art prints, give the room a trad spin.
