For the clients, a family of five, Vastu Shastra was an important overarching theme in the design brief. “Keeping vastu as our guiding light, we focused on creating free-flowing spaces, optimising natural light and ventilation, and marrying varied materials and colours. The plot was originally on the north–south axis, while the ideal orientation in a hot and dry climate is east–west. We attuned the home to the climatic conditions by introducing recessed openings and exposed brickwork,” says Jayshil Patel, co-founder and principal architect of JPLUSDARCHITECTS.

An entryway paved in black granite leads into a lofty foyer, where an exposed RCC ceiling lends a raw and earthy feel to the space. In this picture, we see the entry on the right and a puja room on the left, and on both sides the foyer flows into living spaces.

The living room is cloaked in hushed hues and airy elements. Italian marble clads the floor, helping to keep the room cool in the raging summers.
“The owners gave us free rein over the decor style and palette. Their only request was that we pay special attention to maximising light and ventilation. In that vein, we decided to use neutral tones such as grey and beige for the shell, and introduced subtle splashes of colour by way of vivid accents. We also created east-facing openings to help illuminate the room with natural light throughout the day,” notes Patel.

The living area opens up into a triple-height interstitial space that welcomes sunlight from overhead. A muted chevron pattern graces the floor while a copper-toned bench swing, hosted in an alcove, acts as a striking focal point. White sculptural birds adorn the cobalt wall above, presenting yet another delicate suggestion of the outdoors.

The puja room channels rusticity and modernity in equal measure. A panel of exposed RCC wall carries a bas-relief depiction of pichwai art (a traditional Rajasthani style of devotional painting). This is the room’s crowning glory, highlighted further by the adjacent white walls. A sparkling white marble counter offsets the earthiness of the exposed cement, conjuring an air of serene simplicity.

The kitchen sports a minimalistic palette of grey and yellow. An L-shaped counter, defined by pendant lights, serves as a breezy breakfast bar.
“The kitchen dinette opens out to the kitchen garden, which offers a soothing view of pint-sized verdure,” says Patel.

The grandfather’s room, located in the south-west corner of the ground floor, is homely and earthy. Dove-grey walls cocoon the neutral decor, while a headboard backdrop, composed of dark grey mosaic tiles, adds shine to the surroundings. A lounge chair under the large corner window forms a sunny reading nook.

Shades of maroon spell royalty in the master bedroom. Armani brown marble adorns the floor, while teak-veneer furniture with fine brass detailing adds kingly opulence to the aesthetic.
“This bedroom opens out to a balcony on the southwest end, catching a cool breeze throughout the year,” Patel says.

The elder daughter’s bedroom is dominated by a palette of burnt orange, dove grey and warm wood. An ochre headboard and a dark wooden wardrobe infuse warmth into the decor, while a sweeping white study table squares off the room at the back.
“The balcony overlooks the neighbouring farmland, providing plenty of sunlight and a beautiful view of the surrounding green landscape. The steel sliding door has been optimised for safety,” says Patel.

According to Patel, if there were a trophy for the most interesting room, it would, indisputably, go to this one. “The younger daughter’s brief was simple. Her exact words were ‘I want to live in pink’,” he says.
The clients wanted an enduring aesthetic that would evolve through the years. In light of this, the designers curated a bouquet of hallmarks for the room.

“We incorporated pastel hues, zigzag cuts and whimsical paintings; a visual medley we felt would grow with the little girl. We pointed the design scheme at maximising natural light by way of light colours and large windows,” says Patel.

The ensuite bathroom continues the pink and grey theme of the bedroom. The restrained grey backdrop is punctuated by eye-popping pink mosaic tiles and a cheerful bubblegum-toned under-sink cupboard.
