We bedeck a puja ghar with beautiful idols, lamps and assorted decorations, but what about the puja room walls and ceilings? A lot of what creates an exquisite ambience in a prayer room comes from how these two, which have the most surface area, are planned and decorated. If done right, puja room walls and ceilings can create quite an impact. Paradoxically, given its usually smaller dimensions, a puja space can be tricky when it comes to decorating these very surfaces. What can one do, apart from putting up a picture or two? A lot more, going by the suggestions we have compiled for you.
1. This puja room exudes a warm, inviting quality, with its neutral interior and dim backlit acrylic panels that run along the walls and behind the shrine, highlighting the idols.
Tip: Translucent wall panels come in different colours and patterns. Neutral tints such as creams and off-whites emit a calmer and more peaceful aura, unlike brighter hues.

Backlit Corian panels (like the one on the ceiling in this image) can be used on puja room walls and ceilings alike. They can be customised by etching different patterns in varying colours and textures.

2. Compact yet oozing with character, this vibrant floor-to-ceiling wallpaper is an apt setting for the deity. The white altar creates balance in a space that might have been overwhelmed by the brightness of the walls.
3. This enclosed puja space, specially created in the middle of this room, has beautiful glass doors that almost look filigreed. They have actually been painted with delicate, detailed motifs, giving the puja room a decorative quality.
4. A glossy inverted puja room ceiling is highlighted by recessed lights, beautifully complementing the metallic pendant light. The textured altar wall looks rather like hand-beaten metal and is decorated with stencilled motifs, bordered on either side by intricately designed jali-like panels.
5. The wall behind the shrine looks as though a tray ceiling has been laid vertically. The effect is actually created by a marble panel erected within a niche. Recessed lights in the niche and behind the panel give an impression of depth, which is reflected in the inverted ceiling.
6. The sole deity in this modern puja room is highlighted against a dual-coloured wall, partly covered with variously angled wood-strip panels. What is especially interesting is the effect of the doha inscribed on the glass wall that divides the puja room from the sky-lit pool of water. Not only does it provide a dramatic edge, it is also powerfully energising in its simplicity.
7. This small contemporary puja room with jalis has been worked into a well-planned wall niche – a wall that is embossed with a geometric floral motif, providing a perfect foil to the magnificent idol. The wall motifs find resonance in the latticework frame, exemplifying harmony.
8. This dark wood altar stands out superbly in a sea of orange. Stencilled figures of the flute-playing Krishna and his gopis, and an Om symbol provide relief to otherwise plain puja room walls.
9. Here, the backlit wall in wood continues upwards to an inverted ceiling, together providing all the lighting required in the small space. The glossy wall on the right has mirror chips embedded in it, creating an eclectic design scheme.
10. A verdant wall makes this puja room an ideal space for prayer and meditation. Completing the rustic, traditional look is the tiled roof, punctured with intermittent skylights to filter in light.
11. The vibrant blue centre panel on this puja room wall adds a dash of colour. Side walls in wood, with plenty of pictures dotting the space, make for an energetic, lively decor.
12. In a soft all-white space, acting as a foil to the colourful idols, is the recessed archway-style wall that gives depth to what seems like a small puja room. The lattice-like pattern on the wall uplifts the arch from plain to design-worthy. This is a great idea for prayer spaces in small flats, bringing depth through wall accents that also demarcate a prayer area without using up floor space.
