Bangalore Houzz: Bursts of Colour Makes This a Happy Holiday Home
This holiday home uses patterns, geometric shapes and vibrant details to create a refreshing palette
By the time Shalini George, interior designer and founder, Shalini George Interiors, started work on this holiday home on the outskirts of the city, a majority of the fixtures, fittings and finishings were already in place. “I had to find a way of incorporating the client’s wishes in terms of colour and feel of the space into the pre-defined specifications,” explains George. She did this by introducing a riot of colour in accessories, so that the overall decor wouldn’t clash with the scheme of the original architect. The result is a bold yet refreshing second home where the family can escape the hustle and bustle of inner city living, relax and entertain.
The villa features multiple spots for relaxation and entertaining guests, such as a jacuzzi, pool and barbecue area surrounded by a manicured garden, as well as a family room and a terrace on the second floor with sit-out areas. “One unique feature of this house is its dry-stone cladding – travertine – used on external and some internal walls, creating a cohesive, luxurious feel,” says George. A wraparound slatted metal grill lends an interesting look to the facade.

The designer imagined the entrance and main corridor of the home as a minimal space accented with a few bursts of colour. “You are welcomed into the home with quirky typography artwork, which puts a smile on your face,” she says. The main corridor leads to a guest bedroom on the right and then an open staircase. Beyond that lies an open-plan living area that seamlessly blends into the dining room.
One of the most notable features in the living area are the double-height windows that span the entire room, flooding the space and the family room above it with natural light. George accented the predominantly black-and-white colour palette with vibrant furnishings, lamps and decor pieces, and used a geometric area rug to anchor the seating area.
Another angle of the living room showcases an open shelving unit that has been used to partially partition this area from the staircase. Used in both the living and dining rooms, the powder-blue curtains, layered with white sheers, work well to tone down the stark contrast of black and white.
“In the dining room, stackable doors open out onto the beautifully landscaped backyard with a barbecue, pool and jacuzzi,” says George. This light-filled room features the same colour palette, with metallic details such as the dining chair legs adding a luxe touch. Again, George has used a geometric rug to demarcate the space. Natural light reflects off the neutral Italian marble flooring, making these public spaces appear more open and airy.
The ground floor also houses a guest bedroom with timber flooring that adds warmth to the room. The neutral colour palette is brought to life with a few pops of bright yellow, used in moderation. The crisp clean-lined furniture provides a minimal feel, while flowing sheers soften the look.
As you head up the stairs to the first floor, you are greeted by an open family room. “It has a half-wall looking down to the living area below,” George says. In this space, along with patterns George has used burnt orange to uplift the black-and-white decor.
Notice the little details that tie the room together – the black piping on the white L-shaped sofa or the powder-blue plate for the planter, which matches the curtains. Next to the family room is the master bedroom, while to the left of the staircase lie two more bedrooms.
An interesting feature in the master bedroom is that one enters the room via a walk-through wardrobe. Wood flooring coupled with wood finish on the doors and wardrobe infuse the expansive room with warmth. George has added a seating area here with a light-grey-and-white-checked ottoman and a plush area rug.
Sticking to the black-and-white theme with pops of colour, the master bedroom has been designed as an airy, comfortable space. Minimal in design, the two black hanging lights work to visually frame the vibrant artwork and winged headboard.
Another bedroom on the first floor features vibrant details such as an orange-upholstered bed and headboard, yellow table lamps and bright artwork. Showcasing how every inch of a room can be used to advantage, the designer has carved a cosy yet functional work area out of an alcove near the wardrobe.
The third bedroom on the first floor uses details like a bright-yellow headboard and pouffe, vibrant throw cushions and a pared-back area rug to bring the room to life. The starkness of the bare, crisp white walls has been tempered by the warmth brought in by the wood flooring.
“The second floor comprises one bedroom, a recreation room and the terrace,” says George. In this bedroom, the designer worked in a black, white and cool grey colour palette. Two sharp stripes across the flowing white curtains, a minimal coat rack in the corner and stark artwork give this room character. Bright yellow has been used in moderation to uplift the palette.
“With beautiful views of the park in front of the villa, the long terrace features various pockets of seating areas,” says George. In this portion of the terrace, the designer created a cosy nook with cane furniture in white, with light-grey upholstery, keeping the space simple yet inviting.
