When Priyanka and Piyush Mehra, co-founders and chief design architects of P S Design, received the brief for this home, one thing stood out. “Ranjeet was clear that the home should be reminiscent of his hometown, Goa, and carry the rustic and colourful notes of his childhood,” says Priyanka.
“We were given free rein over the creative process, and we experimented with materials and textures, marrying elements like raw silk, distressed wood and painted finishes with vibrant fabrics, accessories and patterned flooring, to create a luxurious yet earthy aesthetic. The furniture and furnishings were chosen together with the clients. They were keen on bright and cheerful decor, and we worked together on the fabric and furniture styles to create the exact look that they wanted,” she adds.

A customised turquoise sofa, upholstered in a combination of raw silk, cotton and satin, occupies the wall to the right, serving as an arresting design statement. Light and earthy wood-and-rope stools masquerade as wall hangings, highlighting the exposed cement wall behind them, and channeling airy beachside vibes into the space.

To the right of the turquoise sofa sits an antique-finish chest that complements the old-world feel provided by the heritage-pattern cement tile. A small Tanjore painting fills the wall above.

To the left of the front door lies the dining area, styled as a sunny and space-saving diner-style booth. The nook is outfitted in light tones, giving it a casual, cafe-style air. The wall behind the diner hosts a collection of pictures and other memorabilia from the clients’ travels.

“The clients entertain a lot, and hence, needed a well-designed bar to take centre stage at parties. The backsplash was created with handmade printed copper tiles, and the counter features a rare blue backlit onyx top. The cabinets are crafted from aged wood,” notes Priyanka.
Adds Piyush, “Ranjeet was completely invested in the design process, and it’s no surprise that the bar has become his favourite nook in the house.”

The dining area leads into a common lobby, which serves as a gateway to the master bedroom on the right and the kids’ bedroom on the left. To the right, between the bar and the lobby, lies the entrance to the guest bedroom.

The master bedroom is a melange of rustic, organic hues. The bed is complemented by a faux-leather floor-to-ceiling headboard, while the closets are sheathed in chalkboard-style wallpaper. An ornate wood-framed mirror crowns the side table, adding a traditional flair to the bedroom. The floor is clad in engineered wood.
The master bathroom is a characterful bohemian retreat, bursting with colourful accents. A butter-yellow wash basin is matched by a whimsical mirror in canary yellow. Sky-blue and sunshine-yellow tiles turn the space into a sunny haven.

The kids’ bedroom is designed keeping in mind the polarity between its occupants – a teenage girl and an eight-year-old boy.
“The backdrop of the study table and library unit is achieved with a multicoloured, tile-effect wallpaper. We added a bold blue study chair to offset the busy wall. To the right, a closet with a chalkboard surface serves as a creative canvas for the kids,” says Priyanka.

“The kids’ room oscillates between being a bedroom and a playroom, thanks to a trundle bed that rolls out at night, and slides back in during the day. We opted for a trundle bed to open the room out to more space during the day,” says Piyush.
A customised wallpaper, featuring quotes and sayings, and the kids’ names, adorns the wall behind the bed.

The guest bedroom carries the air of an elegant vintage escape. An antique blue closet with louvred shutters, and a customised headboard, outfitted in tufted printed fabric, spell classic chic.

“For us, the living room stands out as the most interesting room in the house, because it contains a potpourri of eclectic pieces. The furniture, walls and floor all blend beautifully to create a vibrant and fun space,” says Priyanka.
