Re-use, recycle, refresh

When my friends Sangeetha and Anand set a wedding date, the first thing they did was to put together their savings and buy the home of their dreams. It is a ground floor apartment since they have a hyperactive Indie dog who needs garden space. The flat came fully fitted out with the woodwork and some basic furniture- beds, dining table etc. But Sangeetha, having followed the Studio’s work for some years, was determined get me to redo the interiors. I was equally adamant that she should save her money and not touch a thing. So we finally arrived at a compromise: I would (to the extent possible) reuse the existing material from the furniture already in place, and build new furniture with it in our style. Sangeetha also bought new furniture so the refurbished stuff had to gel with that too. We accomplished this task in a month so that their home would be ready to move into immediately after the wedding. Sangeetha was totally involved in the process; we argued constantly but the results are a happy mix. Hats off to my cheerful team of carpenters and painters who made the whole exercise so much fun.
