This was one of those prefabricated villas, built totally with concrete. We had a huge wall in the living-dining area which the clients initially wanted to clad with brick tiles throughout. But that would have been too vast an area (not to mention expensive)- something like 18 feet high and 25 feet across. And thereafter we would have had to build a wooden TV unit with a panel to mount it on. That's when I got this idea- why not create a structure in real brick instead of cladding and use that as a backdrop for the TV? Thereby reducing the area and cost of the bricks and still give the client the warmth and beauty of open brickwork? My inspiration? 'Canadian fireplace' or 'Good Housekeeping'. Since we were not building it against a standard brick and plaster wall, it was a tricky exercise. We had to tie the new wall to the concrete one by inserting steel rods at every 3rd or 4th course of bricks. And here it is
