In this 15-year-old duplex, the homeowners were keen on retaining some historical elements, such as the flooring and wooden structural frames.
“The clients wanted the house to exude the energy of a timeless sanctuary in a modern setting. We were able to give the house a warm, lived-in vibe, by combining the old with the new,” says Chanya Kaur, founder and chief interior designer of The Pure Concept Home.

The foyer leads into the living room, whose tour de force is its double-height ceiling.
“Double-height ceilings are a rarity in Mumbai and the large windows help further emphasise the room’s height. We chose diaphanous sheers to allow an evolving play of light through the day. The opaque, printed curtains, on the other hand, offer a dramatic dialogue of light and shadow,” says Kaur.

A semi-open walled partition separates the dining room from the living area. The rectangular table and matching black chairs project an understated presence juxtaposed with the nature-inspired, arabesque-style wallpaper.

The dining room is dominated by a monochrome palette with restrained doses of gold.
“We used plants to soften the dividing line between the living and dining areas. The rattan pendants inspire a laid-back mood during meals together,” notes Kaur.

A sisal-carpeted wooden staircase takes visitors to the first floor, which is home to the television den, kitchen and bedrooms.
The television den is a smorgasbord of patterns by way of the Middle Eastern-style wallpaper, gingham-print sofa and rustic fabrics…
…creating a cosy and vibrant hangout space for the family.
The kitchen is visible from the den, thanks to an open-plan layout, its wooden cabinetry providing an organic counterbalance to the surrounding greenery.
The master bedroom echoes a restful vibe, courtesy its sage-green palette and subdued floral wallpaper.
“The soft green canopy over the four-poster bed beautifully complements the wallpaper. The combined effect helps create a whimsical, dreamy feel,” Kaur says.

The second bedroom flips the conventional design rule book with an indigo ceiling and white walls. The white cabinetry melds into the walls, while the solid-wood four-poster bed provides an earthy offset to the contemporary scheme.
The corner by the window serves as a musical retreat for the home owner.

A black open shelving unit, home to trophies and tchotchkes, defines one wall.
The ensuite bathroom is defined by clean lines and hushed tones.
The first-floor terrace features a cosy sit-out.
“The terrace was styled like a garden-like sanctuary. It is a world of its own, away from the surrounding hustle-bustle,” concludes Kaur.

“The wood-and-marble floor was retained from the original construction. We added a sisal rug to give the space a tactile edge,” says Kaur.
