“The clients hail from Coorg and their design vision for the home was in keeping with their heritage; as something reminiscent of the plantation-style estates of their native land. With Kodava roots myself, the brief struck an emotional chord with me. This residence was my homage to our shared homeland,” says Nain Belliappa, founder and chief interior designer of Houseof9design.

The main door opens into a passageway anchored by a weathered brick tile wall and a deep-toned ashwood console.
“The console, with its turned legs and detailed knobs, is the pièce de résistance. The mirror, meanwhile, does a wonderful job of amplifying the light in this corner,” Belliappa says.

The passageway leads into the living room, which carries whiffs of English vintage style, which “allude to the colonial-period summer dwellings in Coorg built by the British”. By the same token, the central fireplace, clad in rugged natural stone and crowned by a raw timber mantel, channels a country-chic flair. The muted shiplap wall counterbalances the peripheral rusticity.
“We salvaged a raw timber scrap for the mantel as part of our effort to use natural materials as far as possible. The Samsung ‘The Frame’ TV is the undisputed hero in the living space; it swings between serving as a television during downtime and a bespoke display of art otherwise,” Belliappa says.

Hushed tones and assorted textures dominate the seating area by way of a custom leather-feel sofa, a blush-pink daybed, and cane and teak-wood armchairs.
“The pedestal side table features intricate hand carvings and a pristine white marble top. The Buddha painting, a beloved family treasure, takes centre stage on the wall,” Belliappa says.

The living room opens out into a grey-walled balcony with casual seating.
A pair of carved teak-wood pillars demarcates the dining room from the living area. Here, an oak-wood table with carved legs is complemented by cane and oak-wood chairs with similar detailing.
Of the vanilla-toned cabinets that background the setting, Belliappa notes, “The finishing of the unit mirrors that of the cabinetry in the living area. Apart from housing crockery, the unit also ingeniously conceals a puja space.”

The kitchen is situated beside the dining room.
Here, powder-blue and dove-grey cabinets come together with a white marble backsplash to deliver a farmhouse-style aesthetic.

“The original blueprint of the home posed the challenge of navigating multiple corners while attempting to establish the working triangle. A partition wall was done away with to open up the layout and, in its place, a teak veneer island with a waterfall-edge breakfast counter was introduced. The internal entrance to the service staff quarters was also sealed to create room to accommodate the refrigerator and the lofty built-in storage unit,” says Belliappa.

The playroom, formerly the fourth bedroom, was tailored as a learning space for the young daughters. A Victorian-style bookcase adds to the home’s old-world charm.

The master bedroom is dominated by neutral hues, classical moulding and teak-wood furniture and accents.
“The master suite is evocative of cabins tucked away in the sloping terrains of Coorg’s luxuriant hills,” says Belliappa.

“The wardrobes are divided into his-and-hers sections. Kanchan’s is a light beige, with fabric inserts from the Sabyasachi Nilaya collection placed behind the glass panes. Rashin’s wardrobe sits in the transitory space between the bedroom and the ensuite bathroom,” Belliappa says.
With beige marble, pale wood tones, a charcoal sink and monochrome patterns, the master bathroom is a picture of minimalism.
The vanity packs plenty of storage as it extends into a capacious linen cabinet.

The daughters’ bedroom is characterised by whimsical prints, shiplap panelling, and pink and white tones. Curving headboards offset the linearity of the wall panels.
Opposite the twin beds, a sweeping workstation mounted atop a central chest of drawers offers a workspace for each girl.

To the side, a bold pink wardrobe steals the limelight. Beside it rests a white vanity, backgrounded by a vibrant flamingo-print wallpaper that injects pattern into the solid colour scheme.
“The room has been compartmentalised into zones for resting, studying and dressing up,” Belliappa says.

Bubblegum-pink subway tiles give the daughters’ bathroom a playful appeal.
“Getting the perfect shades down for the grouting was a priority — a pale grey tone was selected for the wall-tile grouting, whereas a deep navy grounds the floor tiles. The double-bowl vanity and copper-toned fixtures provide the perfect balance to the dominance of pink,” Belliappa says.

The guest bedroom is enveloped in subtle hues and moulded wainscoting. The botanical-print wallpaper conjures a tranquil air, while the fabric-upholstered bed and country-style nightstands complete the subdued setting.
