Nestled in a quiet village on the outskirts of Bangalore, this nature-filled home belongs to a family of three.
“The clients wanted an escape away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where they could introspect and calm their senses. They needed something that took them closer to nature, and yet afforded privacy. The home features a spread of gardens, making it equally inward- and outward-looking,” says Gaurav Roy Choudhury, founder and principal architect of his eponymous architecture firm Gaurav Roy Choudhury Architects.

The main door opens into the living room, characterised by cement oxide for the ceiling and floors, natural wood grains and tactile accents. The perforated brick walls mirror the exterior facade, channelling, in turn, dozens of bijou apertures that welcome sunlight indoors. An aqua buttoned sofa and a pair of wooden chairs zone the seating area, while modish pendants preside over the setting. The floor is clad in polished mirror-finished concrete.

“The living room sits like a pavilion along the main garden and is virtually detached from the rest of the house,” says Roy Choudhury. “Besides two gardens, the ground floor is also home to the dining room and the parents’ bedroom.”

A passageway runs along a garden, connecting the living room to the dining room. “Both the garden and the interior floor level elevate to form the dining area,” says Roy Choudhury.
A wooden dining table, flanked by chairs on one side and a bench on the other, occupies the heart of the dining room, melding with the brick backdrop.
The perforations on the wall carpet the room in a patchwork of sunlight and shadows.

Sliding doors connect the dining room to a rectangular garden, facilitating a fluid interior–exterior connection.
Extruded brick walls highlight the parents’ bedroom. The wall to the left features perforations that serve as petite windows to the green outdoors. A cabana bed anchors the slumber area.

The staircase culminates in a circulation area, where a casual seating arrangement takes centre stage. The ceiling wears a cement oxide finish, complemented by the extruded red brick walls. Spherical white pendants float suspended over the setting, lending a modish edge.
“The mezzanine floor plays host to the den and the guest bedroom, while overarching the gardens below,” says Roy Choudhury.

A diagonal slices a wall in the guest bedroom, casting a dynamic balance between red brick and white concrete . A perforated brick screen embellishes the wall above the headboard, acting as the room’s focal point.
“The guest bedroom has a private sit-out and garden on the mezzanine level,” Roy Choudhury says.

A pair of rooftop gardens flanks the mezzanine floor, crowning the garage and the living room on the ground floor respectively.
Towering foliage from the main garden below coalesces with the mezzanine verdure, projecting a seamless sweep of green.

A series of steps rises to the first floor, which houses the master bedroom and the son’s bedroom.
In the master bedroom, extruded bricks compose the walls, while the inset apertures cascade squares of sunlight across the room.
“The master bedroom wraps around the mezzanine garden below. It sits in the most distant corner of the house, allowing for extra privacy,” explains Roy Choudhury.

Ocean-blue mosaic tiles sweep across one wall, posing as the hero feature of the master bathroom. A vanity along this side underpins the sink, while a circular mirror hangs on the wall above. Grey tiles cloak the floor and adjacent walls.
