Ahmedabad Houzz: Grey Brings This Renovated Bungalow to Life
This bungalow's renovation lead to the creation of a lounge, meditative areas, nature-viewing rooms, all against a grey backdrop
After occupying a newly built property, the client wanted a designer who could personalise the house, infuse more warmth into it. “This home was a renovation project – the client wanted to change nearly 50 per cent of the plan. I rebuilt the staircase, added a puja room, dressing room, expanded the kitchen, included a recreation facility, extended the height of the dining area, added a small courtyard and created a new entrance vestibule,” says Ashish Kesurvala of S A K Designs.
The large sliding entrance gate opens to a vestibule dotted with plants and an eye-catching lighting piece. “A Buddha statue with a geometric wooden screen behind it creates a welcoming vibe,” Kesurvala says.

The front door ushers us into the pale-grey living room, which is partially separated from the other areas of the house by a graphic metal screen the colour of old gold. “The idea of the partition screen was to make the living room feel visually connected to the rest of house while also giving it privacy,” Kesurvala says.

The living room is unique in the way a long horizontal cutout in the wall opens the room to a view of the garden, also forming the backdrop to the sofa. “The painting is a serigraph by S.H. Raza; a limited edition sourced from Aakar Art Gallery,” Kesurvala says.

The living room leads to the double-height dining room that has a family lounge-cum-courtyard on one side. The cascading lighting piece in warm copper hues makes for an eye-catching feature in this grey-toned room.
“This space is accentuated with a stone wall which runs all the way through the courtyard and entrance vestibule to the main gate,” Kesurvala says.
The break-out space next to the dining room is specially created for the family to enjoy intimate meals or afternoon tea while sitting amidst nature.
A powder room is located on the ground floor. “This pendant by GN Lighting was specially customised for the space. The walls are vitrified tiles in concrete finish,” says Kesurvala.

The puja room is on the ground floor. It is a cool. serene space with the shrine and the wall behind it in white marble, throwing into relief the central idol in black stone. A cluster of copper pendant lamps introduce a touch of warmth.

Behind the dining room is the large kitchen, where the soothing grey palette continues to be the focus shade. The modular kitchen’s sleek modern looks go well with the colour. A kitchen island offers additional work and storage space, and injects a touch of colour with its wood-and-stone top.
On the first floor are the master bedroom and the children’s bedrooms. “These are simple spaces with minimal furniture. The palette is kept muted and a general feeling of restfulness takes over,” says Kesurvala.
The second floor opens up to a lobby, which is accentuated with a family photo wall collage. This room leads to the recreation room.

The recreation room is a composition of vibrant colours, mixed with muted tones and a customised wooden ceiling. “The grey panelling behind the blue sofa is made in MDF and has been given a special rustic paint coat. The scale of the long pendant adds a surprise factor to this room’s design,” says Kesurvala.
