Chattarpur Houzz: A Swiss-Inspired Weekend Getaway Near Delhi
Designer Sanjyt Syngh converts a pre-built structure into an Alpine yet modern retreat
“In terms of aesthetics, the brief was extremely crisp. The homeowners wanted to convert an existing structure into a chalet,” says Sanjyt Syngh, founder of Sanjyt Syngh. Chalets are wooden houses typical of the Swiss Alps, with sloping roofs to prevent ponding of snow. The designers embraced traditional characteristics of the architecture, such as a pitched roof and wooden facade to bring a slice of Switzerland to this Delhi farmhouse.
Large picture windows, a sloping roof and lots of wood give the perfect Alpine finish to this weekend home located amidst expansive greenery.
Though built in 2010, the house was redesigned in 2016 and again in 2019. The ground floor has an open-plan layout that includes kitchen, living and dining areas. There’s also a bedroom on this level.
Spread over two floors, the house is divided into a guest floor and a private floor. An infinity pool and lush green landscaping transform it into a tranquil weekend getaway.

“Drenched in dark colours, the ground floor living room is a very cosy space. It has a fireplace so one can comfortably entertain here during the winters,” says Syngh.
Muted earthy tones define the ground floor and also complement the wooden accents and fireplace. Reclaimed or high-quality up-cycled wood is used in different forms across the house – like in the ceiling – to accentuate a country-style ambience.

“The morning light turns the kitchen into a perfect spot for the family to hang out and make breakfast together,” says Syngh. “The open kitchen overlooks the living room and, with the fireplace, doubles as an entertaining space, especially during winter.”
Rustic wooden shelves add oodles of character to the room. Metallic hues from the pendant light above the dining table, with the grey Chesterfield sofa, bring in elements of sophistication.

The attention to detail around the house is fantastic. This charming hyggekrog (Danish concept of a snug nook or corner) accentuates the log-cabin-style decor with a wooden rack in natural finish.
Syngh says, “The staircase is made out of reclaimed wood and so is the wall panelling.”
Bijou corners and passages come alive with vintage artwork and old-world accents. The staircase area is drenched in a rich and glamorous shade of paint.

On the upper floor, the landing space seamlessly blends into the living room, which is sectionalised into multiple seating zones, including a study, lounge and covered terrace.

“Overlooking an infinity pool is the first-floor living room with a stylish personality. This space is meant for entertaining guests and has a very airy vibe. It is dominated by a dark colour scheme, which is rarely seen in Indian residences,” says Syngh. “Though complementing dark elements is a daunting task, we’ve ensured that each corner is thoughtfully and tastefully curated to bring a sense of uniqueness.”
In one corner of the living room is a study table that doubles as a corner office. Rich midnight blue evokes a vintage feel, and serves as the perfect backdrop for eclectic artwork.
A covered terrace serves as a great spot to read while sipping on a cuppa and enjoying spectacular views of the pond, where ducks sport in the water.
“The first-floor bedroom isn’t really designated to anyone but is mostly used by the family. Wall panelling and artwork behind the bed draw attention. Our customised bed linen matches the ambience of the artwork,” says Syngh.
Dark, gleaming and jewel tones lend an eclectic vibe to this space.

Used mostly by guests, the colour scheme of the bedroom on the ground floor complements the wood-log ceiling. The designer opted for muted sage-green curtains to offset the browns.
This is the ground floor.
The more secluded first floor has a living area, lounge, terrace and a bedroom for the homeowners.
