UNEVEN was approached by the homeowners with a brief for “a cosy villa meant for contemporary living, with careful planning keeping in mind the guidelines of vastu”. The founder duo designed a triple-storey house, measuring approximately 3500 square feet, that offers spacious rooms and wide spaces on a relatively compact plot size of 1860 square feet. The duo says, “The house is rooted in minimal design concepts, while providing all facilities falling under a contemporary lifestyle”. It is a study in airy interior spaces with ample natural light and clutter-free spaces. The overall look and feel of the project is defined by the use of overwhelming grey tones, materials and textures.

The façade of the house is a mix of fins and sandstone textured cladding; the fins also act as sun-cutters and provide a layer of privacy from the neighbours.
The foyer opens into a large open-layout living area sporting an all-grey monotone. Says Patel, “The ceilings are kept raw with concrete finish, where the patterns are created through a formwork of rough wood strips, with an innovative slab bottom acting as a designed ceiling in itself. This also eliminates the need for a false ceiling, giving the overall space a sense of volume.”

The accent wall of the living room features a beautiful hand-painted mural of the champa tree in charcoal, reflecting the family’s fondness for the tree and its flowers.
Deep sofas upholstered in off-white make for relaxed viewing of the TV that is mounted on a concrete-finish wall, framed by natural light flooding in through a border of glassed-in openings .

A casual dining arrangement comprising a teakwood picnic-style bench connects to the kitchen, fulfilling an open-plan form while maximising visual connectivity and achieving a clutter-free common space.
The indoor open-layout living area opens on to a patio via glass sliding doors, effectively creating a single, unified zone when the doors are open. The cosy nook, furnished in pale-grey weather-proof furniture, makes a perfect spot for the elders in the family to take in some fresh air.

Going up a floor, one arrives at the double-height puja area that is located in between the sister’s bedroom and the children’s. The sense of antiquity and colour from the pillars and doors lends a special vibrance and depth to the space.
”The planning of these spaces has been done in a grid form, which allows for future modification or expansion of either of the bedroom spaces,” Patel says.

The children’s bedroom reflects their simple tastes and minimal requirements. The furniture designed is fundamental, relieved by the wooden tones that bring a certain warmth to the overall simple scheme. “The ambience of this room is soothing owing to the non-cluttering interior design,” Fernandes says.
The bathroom houses the wardrobes, thus freeing up space in the bedroom. The doors in a distressed turquoise blue are a perfect complement to the subtle tones that reign.
The sister’s bedroom is a spacious room located in the front side of the house; it has a balcony running alongside, making the room airy and full of light. Hints of pink relieve the stark grey palette.
The bathroom is on similar minimalist lines, in glass and grey tones. Each bathroom employs an accent colour as a highlighting feature; here, it is the bright mustard wall in the shower area.
The master bedroom is located on the third floor, with plenty of daylight and fresh air coming in through twin windows. Here the thematic grey is bleached of it weighty shades. The headboard is in distressed white, providing a perfect foil to a display of dry branches, completing the slightly rustic vibe of the bedroom.

The bathroom adheres to the reigning house colour. The slatted ceiling in dark wood provides a nice contrast to the grey tones, while the mirrored wall makes the space seem larger than it is.
The bedroom opens to a green terrace garden with an adjoining splash pool. The garden has a separate entry for the rest of the members too, to enjoy the cosy seating space, or the joys of the splash pool.
Fernandes says, “The terrace has a sense of openness as well as of privacy due to the strategic placement of the ‘fins’ that also act as sun-cutters in the elevation. They allow in filtered light and screen the view from neighbouring houses.”
