“The client brief for this 3-BHK residence called for a sophisticated yet cosy aesthetic. As a home for a family of four, it had to cater to two generations under one roof. The client gave us a free hand over the design process, and so we decided to turn to the city’s architectural history in search of a suitable style. In Mumbai, Art Deco has a rich architectural legacy. Over the centuries, however, the style has been eclipsed by other more prevalent design techniques. We decided to pay ode to its revival in this apartment,” says Manish Dikshit, co-founder and chief interior designer of Aum Architects.

The living room, steeped in velvety, rose-tinted hues, is characterised by rich detail, geometric artwork and decadent fabrics.

The room’s bold colour is offset by monochrome chevron curtains and black-and-white artwork.
“The niche in the living room has been carved out of an ill-placed column that was originally a tremendous eyesore. It now serves as a charming gallery wall for vintage-style photographs and objets d’art,” notes Borawake.
Lighting fixtures: Teknolite, Deepam Light; furnishings: AA Living, Cottons and Satins, Surprise Home Linen; curtains: Sreeji Furnishing; sofas and coffee table are custom-made

The dining room is situated adjacent to the living room and offers visual continuity by way of a consistent floral-inspired palette.
“The client socialises a lot and hence, wanted a fluid area without the encumbrance of a permanent dining table,” says Borawake.
Adds Dikshit, “We went for a dynamic, drop-down table that could be collapsed when not in use. The table has a beautiful etched glass top that blends into the mirrored wall panel when folded up. The mirrored wall scheme helps create an illusion of volume.”

With the table folded up (at left, out of sight in photo), the dining area masquerades as an informal lounge, with the dining bench, dining chairs and an additional three-seater sofa conjuring a convivial setting.

The dining area gets another shot of Art Deco from one of the bedroom doors that open off it – it has bold brass inlay inspired by the Art Deco style. The adornment provides a welcome touch of shine to the surrounding matte scheme.
A black-and-white chevron pattern rules over the kitchen, providing complementary detail to the solid teal of the overhead cabinets. A spotless white platform and a high-gloss onyx backsplash serve as a curing bridge between the busy pattern and bold colour.

Gilded door knobs and pulls give the kitchen a glamorous spin, while the wood-panelled floor injects warmth and heart into the cool colour scheme.

The master bedroom is dominated by bottle green and wood, and holds a mirror to the chevron motif in the kitchen. The wood-panelled 3D chevron headboard extends up to the ceiling, urging the eye to travel upwards, creating an exaggerated sense of height and space.
“The master bedroom is fairly small, so we were mindful of using elements that would play to its advantage,” says Borawake.
In a reflection of this thought, the designers outfitted the wardrobe in mirrored panels to magnify the light in the room and make it appear larger.

Earthy and mellow, the master bathroom echoes the base palette of the bedroom. A large gilt-edged mirror adorns the wall, acting as a striking accent piece. A countertop basin, underpinned by a sweeping counter, channels spa-like vibes.
The older daughter’s bedroom is a contemporary interpretation of classic country style. A royal-blue wardrobe steals the limelight against the dominant ivory-and-grey palette, asserting its place as the hero piece. The sloping ceiling gives the room the look of an English attic, while the unique fan accentuates the subtle beauty of the sloping roof. The room’s wall-to-wall windows offer generous views of the outdoors.
The younger daughter’s bedroom is understated yet elegant. Characterised by walnut and vanilla tones, the space features a low bed, a wide nightstand and a decorative table, by way of furniture. A long backlit shelf behind the bed houses curios and keepsakes, making for a charming display against the room’s minimalist shell.

“The door is embellished with a delicate brass grille reminiscent of the Art Deco era. It paves the way for the interior design scheme,” says Nachiket Borawake, chief interior designer and co-founder with Dikshit.
The door opens into a sherbet-hued passageway lined with ornamental pilasters, which leads to the living room.
