Ahmedabad Houzz: A Fresh and Vibrant Home, Rooted in Rajasthan
This home by Design Box dazzles with vernacular accents, eclectic hues and contemporary finishes
Having spent a lot of time abroad, the homeowners wanted to get back in touch with their roots and desired a home that was inspired by Rajasthani architecture but had a modish feel. Adhering to this brief, cofounders Vipul Sharma, principal interior designer, and Swapnil Sharma, the chief design architect, of Design Box punctuated the apartment with ethnic motifs and a vibrant colour palette giving it a one-of-a-kind look.
A metal screen, crafted on site, segregates the entry foyer and living room. The bright blue panels are the first appearance of a colour motif that pops up with its vitalising blue in various parts of the public spaces of the house.

The formal living room has a strong Indian influence with vivid textures and hues. A custom high-back sofa upholstered in velvety blue offsets the warm browns and reds of the Aztec-patterned club chairs.

An arched opening and a swing demarcate the formal living area from the TV room, without any visible boundaries. This space is a mix of details that suggest a rich and regal cultural influence, such as the arch-shaped niches, traditional swing and jewel-hued silk cushions.
The TV room accentuates the vernacular decor theme with a custom diwan or Indian daybed and a shelf unit with native artefacts and curios. A door with arched mirror panels and wooden carving underpins the Rajasthani design theme. The expansive window makes the most of the garden view.

Lined up along the walls, the L-shaped sofa with bright upholstery was built on site. Paintings rest against the wall of the niche, infusing an eclectic vibe.
“The furniture is custom-made, mostly made at site. Some hand-carved units were made in our workshop. The colour palette was selected by the homeowners,” Swapnil Sharma says.

“Considering the frequent traffic between the dining, kitchen and formal living areas, we decided to go for a space-saving round wooden dining table with a curved metal bench and chairs. Beautiful colour contrasts and efficiently designed furniture dominate the design narrative. A traditional console table and jharokha-style mirror create a cohesive look,” says Vipul Sharma.

A unique console with three spindle legs fits into the niche beside the arch opening.
The kitchen provides continuity to the open-plan layout. It has modern, clean-lined decor, with seamless cabinets and a kitchen island. Natural wood offsets the electric-blue hues of the cabinetry.

Drenched in quirky pink, the master bedroom, occupied by the son, exudes luxury with glossy Italian marble and a platform bed. The highlight of this room is a water body with a wooden bench. With wall-to-wall windows offering an expansive view, this spot is like a spa retreat.
Wooden wall panelling in different tones and textures is the focal point of this room. Recessed lights in the niche behind the bed softens the ambience. A sliding door segregates the study area.
According to the designers, the daughter’s room is the most interesting one in the house with a cheerful and energising vibe. The distressed green and earthy grey are finished in Archi Concrete paint which is an anti-algae, acrylic-siloxane plaster coating. A wooden platform anchors the bed and sets up an inviting ambience. Handpicked, carved wood furniture underscores the contemporary boho look.

A jute blind offers a fluid partition to separate the sleeping and study area. Cane cabinetry and chair lend a hint of a bygone era to this spot. A fluted door leads to the daughter’s bathroom, which is dotted with modern Moroccan influences in the patterned floor tiles, pendant lamp and under-sink cabinet.
The parents of the family use the third bedroom. Behind the bed is an accent wall that celebrates patterns, vertical wood panelling and moulding. The furnishing in the bedrooms is from Neptune House and Rug Republic.
