The front elevation makes use of many traditional cottage elements, combining steep roof lines with graceful curves. Clover windows and natural stone give a timeless feeling to the front. The metal roof reflects the sky, and softens the presence of the house. Photographer: Daniel Contelmo Jr.

The client for this home wanted a modern structure that was suitable for displaying her art-glass collection. Located in a recently developed community, almost every component of the exterior was subject to an array of neighborhood and city ordinances. These were all accommodated while maintaining modern sensibilities and detailing on the exterior, then transitioning to a more minimalist aesthetic on the interior. The one-story building comfortably spreads out on its large lot, embracing a front and back courtyard and allowing views through and from within the transparent center section to other parts of the home. A high volume screened porch, the floating fireplace, and an axial swimming pool provide dramatic moments to the otherwise casual layout of the home.

Sustainable measures are seamlessly integrated into the design where in addition to radiant heated concrete floors and on-demand hot water heaters these self-adhesive thin-film photovoltaic solar strips were applied between the ridges of the standing seam metal roof providing "off the grid" electrical power. The existing two storey residence was replanned for the new owners by moving the first floor living areas to the ground floor. A section of the first floor was removed from the north east corner to allow solar access through to the new ground floor living area. This created a double height void which the main ensuite and bedroom view across. External render was replaced with a painted timber cladding, terracotta tiles were replaced with metal sheet roofing and all internal finishes were updated.

On the site of an old family summer cottage, nestled on a lake in upstate New York, rests this newly constructed year round residence. The house is designed for two, yet provides plenty of space for adult children and grandchildren to come and visit. The serenity of the lake is captured with an open floor plan, anchored by fireplaces to cozy up to. The public side of the house presents a subdued presence with a courtyard enclosed by three wings of the house. Photo Credit: David Lamb
