When the clients first enlisted architect Tejas Mistry to build their family bungalow, they had one concern: with the plot surrounded by tightly built form, there would be very little scope for the home to breathe. “The client wanted us to create something magical and outdoorsy, with lots of daylight, ventilation and greenery. The home has various layers of privacy; the private zone is on the inner side while the recreation areas are along the front. We took care to ensure that the flow of natural light remained unhindered,” says the founder and principal architect of The Interior Workshop.

Patchworks of glass and exposed brick define the cuboidal facade of the home. A ribbed fence demarcates the plot from the road beyond.
A gate, camouflaged into the fence, welcomes visitors inside. To the left lies a sheltered car park.

“The client’s belief in vastu led us to construct the built mass on the eastern side and leave the western front open to the outdoors,” says Mistry.

The main door opens into a deep-toned foyer enhanced with varied finishes. The wall on the left wears a flagstone finish, while the rest are in cut natural stone. This space also doubles as a lift lobby.

An autumnal palette of ochre, auburn and sage characterises the living room. The U-shaped seating layout is flanked by a brick wall on one side and a pale grey wall on the other.
A staggered coffee table adds depth and drama to the straight-lined periphery, while a sleek television console squares off the setting.

“The refined-meets-rustic style has an unmistakable modern charm. The palette across the home comprises natural, unfinished materials that display a soft, mellow tone. The home is also centrally air conditioned,” says Mistry.

Natural-grain wooden panels, stone flooring and an exposed RCC ceiling root the dining room in an earthy, organic aura. A rectangular chandelier hangs over the dining table, lending a sculptural touch.
“The red brick and exposed RCC walls, and large glass windows are the shining stars of the dining room,” Mistry says.

Silver-grey cabinetry, brown stone flooring and a cement oxide ceiling channel an industrial-chic presence in the kitchen.
Black track lights and spotlights stud the ceiling, casting an even glow. In the centre of the cooking area, the kitchen island hosts the sink and cooktop.

The staircase connects the ground floor to the floor above.
Of the home’s six bedrooms, five are housed on the first level.
Bare, low-maintenance finishes clad the master bedroom. The grey cement oxide ceiling makes a reappearance, while the wall behind the television is sheathed in uneven stone tiles. Wainscoting of slanted wooden panelling features on the wall behind the bed.
“The bed was specially imported for this bedroom,” says Mistry.

Rough tiles with horizontal ridges give the master walk-in wardrobe a raw edge. The wardrobe is demarcated from the ensuite bathroom by a glass partition.
Dominated by jade and grey, the older daughter’s bedroom echoes the hues outside the sweeping picture window. The dual-toned wall sets the tone for the furnishings, while the marble flooring lends a luxurious touch.
“By the window, a pair of upholstered chairs provide the perfect perch for sundown,” Mistry says.
Opposite the window, lemon-yellow wardrobes add vibrancy to the pared-back aesthetic.

Monochrome but hardly muted, the older daughter’s ensuite bathroom brims with pattern.
“Adjacent walls are defined by inverted black-and-white stone palettes, while the wood-toned ceiling provides a sense of cohesiveness,” Mistry says.

The shades of the ocean are brought alive in the younger daughter’s bedroom. The cobalt upholstered headboard is juxtaposed against a reddish grille. To the right, a mustard-printed credenza and azure wall deliver a lesson in colour blocking.

Streaky white marble envelops the floor and walls in the younger daughter’s bathroom, cutting a seamless, singular figure. Here, the pedestal sink serves as the centrepiece.
A tangerine headboard adds a pop of cheery colour to the ash-toned guest bedroom.
White stone panels partially backdrop the bed, complementing the eggshell-hued cabinet on the adjacent wall.

The second floor is home to the son’s bedroom, a jacuzzi and the terrace.
The son’s bedroom features a dominance of wood, grey and indigo. Ribbed wooden panelling covers two walls, while the wall opposite the bed sports a textured white finish. The grey headboard and bold blue sofa add tactility to the hard surfaces. A porthole on the farthest wall provides a visual gateway to the adjoining terrace garden.
“The son wanted a bedroom right beside the terrace so that he could enjoy the best of both worlds,” says Mistry.

The son’s walk-in wardrobe is inspired by subtle stone polishes and curvilinear shapes.

The walk-in wardrobe extends into a bathroom bearing similar tones.
Uneven, ridged mosaic tiles project from the walls of the jacuzzi bathroom, creating a riverbed-inspired ambience. Wood cladding on the floor and vanity furthers the down-to-earth aesthetic.
The open-to-sky terrace garden hosts cosy pockets of seating.
A row of planters frames the garden on one side.

The other side is defined by a red brick wall that forms part of the facade.
“The terrace is perfect for a good-weather day. It’s airy, green and looks out to the sky,” concludes Mistry.
