“The design brief by my client was to create a contemporary home for their newly married son and daughter-in-law. We went about designing the space with a very monochromatic palette. The 2800-square-foot home has a feeling of openness; the design is extremely modern and timeless, with hints of quirkiness,” says Jason Wadhwani, principal architect and founder of Jason Wadhwani Design.

As one enters this Peddar Road home through the long passage, there is a waiting room on the left. A grey accent wall with panel moulding frames the area behind the eclectic black-and-tan chaise longue. The floor, white Lasa marble with a black Marquina marble border, anchors the decor.

The passage leads to an open living and dining area. On the left is the living room, which is the most interesting part of the house, according to the designer.

“This room sets the mood for the rest of the house with its design narrative. The furniture adds to the space and makes it look cohesive and stylish. The white panel moulding on the walls completes the look,” says Wadhwani. Two glass showcases flank the television unit and showcase curios and artefacts.

An Essential Guide to Mouldings

Fine moulding on the walls lends an aura of sophistication and gives the entire surface an embellished look. The two doors (displayed in the image) lead to the bedrooms. The left door opens into the guest bedroom and the right to the master bedroom.

In the dining room, a limited-edition veneered dining table with blue upholstered chairs takes centre stage. A sleek striped sideboard and taller storage units balance the design vocabulary. Elevated on slender tapered legs, the customised tall black laminated bar cabinets offer storage. The expansive window bathes the space with natural light.

The chic all-white interiors are offset by a monochromatic black and white striped sideboard and artwork on the wall. A Flos table lamp sits atop the sideboard.

“On the left side of the foyer passage is the TV room. This room has a warmer vibe as opposed to the sleek contemporary look of the rest of the spaces. Panelled grey walls adorn the room. A Josmo couch and centre table fill the seating area. The work station comprises a customised study table and bookshelf with a Cassina study chair,” says Wadhwani.

The master bedroom has a subdued colour palette with white marble flooring and a blue-grey upholstered bed. Layers of soft gold in the brass etagere (open shelf rack) bring in subtle glamour. The panelled wall behind the bed gives continuity to the design aesthetic.

A slatted boiserie wall adds depth to the room and serves as a backdrop for the TV. (Boiserie is the French word for wood panelling, which is used to create symmetry and visual appeal in any space.)

The master bedroom further opens into a bathroom and dressing room. Geometric black-and-white inlay marble flooring catch the eye here.

In the dressing room, columns with vertical wooden slats flank the mirror and bring in warmth. They juxtapose the triangular motifs in the monochrome flooring and create an interesting interplay of patterns.

The guest bedroom also serves as the parents’ bedroom. “It has a bottle-green upholstered headboard with wallpaper-and-wood panelling behind the bed. A comfortable black-and-white striped armchair by Josmo is the perfect place to sit and have a cup of coffee,” says Wadhwani.

Swathed in an avant-garde Cole and Son tropical wallpaper, the parents’ dressing room has a tropical vibe. The tufted pink pouffe offsets the jade hues and lends a sophisticated flair to space.

Different tones of brown in the glossy marble add richness and depth to the guest bathroom. The black under-sink cabinet gives neutral relief.
