Designing a home for two generations requires a fair bit of thinking, admits Mahek Lalan, founder and principal architect of SML Architects. “We installed a seamless stone-crete floor throughout the home to help us link the various spaces together. The home features a potpourri of warm, tactile elements: teak wood accents, polished plywood furniture and shutters, bamboo blinds, brass handles, textured granite tabletops, and more,” notes Lalan.

The dining room is located opposite the front door. It is an intimate space, with a limited palette of monochrome and wood. An angular granite table and minimalist teak-wood chairs conjure a dining layout for four. Black pendants add shine to the pared-back shell.
“The fabric artwork on the wall is hand-embroidered by the women of the Jat artisanal community of Kutch, Gujarat,” shares Lalan.

Ahead of the main door, a passageway leads to the master and parents’ bedrooms.
In the master bedroom, the bed is hosted within an alcove surrounded by a wall-mounted wardrobe scheme. Above the headboard, a floating shelf provides a surface for books and tchotchkes.

In the corner opposite the bed, grey marble sourced from Kishangarh, Rajasthan, serves as the backdrop to the workstation.

Further down the passage, to the right, is the parents’ bedroom. Here, a sombre, subdued palette of wood and white prevails. An eggshell-toned headboard foregrounds a daisy wall, while wooden nightstands cut an earthy presence.
