Mumbai Houzz: Greys & Browns Create Drama in This Home
Italian marble, wood panelling and a modern layout rule this elegant home designed by Gaurav Kharkar & Associates
Vidhita and Gaurav Kharkar, respectively principal designer and principal architect, are the co-founders of Gaurav Kharkar & Associates. The husband-and-wife duo were asked to design a home that was contemporary, spacious and clutter-free and would reflect the personality of the homeowners.
The passage leads to the living room where wood panelling and Italian marble provide continuity to the design narrative. Leather-upholstered sofas and chairs bring in luxury. A plain white wall behind the grey sofa serves as the perfect backdrop to display the vibrant hues of a painting.

The colour and textures of the grey wall and the wooden elements have been used to offset each other.
“A large bevelled niche at the end of the passage doubles as a design element and doorway. They open into the child’s study room, store room and a mandir,” says Gaurav.
On the right side of the house are the bedrooms. The child’s bedroom has an eclectic vibe, with an interplay of materials, wood panelling, Italian marble and rustic tiles. A zesty wall mural with a white brick effect is the focal point of the bedroom. It also juxtaposes the bold wooden floor-to-ceiling panelling.

A door from the TV wall leads to the guest bedroom. To create visual interest, the wall behind the bed features a geometrical cement grid on the lower half and horizontal panels on the upper half.

“The dining area panelling accommodates a door which leads to the master bedroom. The rest of the area has a minimalist look to balance the bold veneer panelling that goes from behind the bed to the ceiling, creating an accent wall,” says Vidhita. On the right side of the bed is an antique chest dresser with metallic finish.

According to the designers, the major challenge in designing this apartment located in Lower Parel was the entrance lobby because of its length. They camouflaged this issue by hanging an artwork on the wall which helped create an illusion of depth in this transitional space. The wooden ceiling draws the eyes upwards while the track lights illuminate the corridor.
