Jaipur Houzz: A City Bungalow Dazzles With Rajasthani Accents
This home is a razzmatazz of rich and regal cultural elements underlined by a contemporary vibe
Rajasthan. The name evokes a certain kind of imagery – of opulent palaces, intricate arches, paintings on haveli walls, handicrafts and lots of bright colours. This home in Jaipur checks all these boxes while welcoming a tinge of modernity too. “The client and I together decided to create a space that brings two contrasting forms of design together, that is, contemporary and traditional, in a unique homogenous setting. Our strength lies in extracting inspirations to create abstract designs and giving them a twist to develop an individual style. The project relays the same emotion throughout,” Shantanu Garg, founder, Shantanu Garg Design, says.

This formal living room gleams with ethnic elements – be it the bright colours, the fabrics or the architectural details. “The classic, vintage-style sofa was given a backdrop of custom hand-painted wall art in gold foil over a green canvas to make the area pop. This is an in-house creation by us. The feature wall’s panel is bordered with thikri (glass inlay) work,” Garg says.
A cool, understated Italian marble flooring balances all the bright elements in the room. The Mughal-style arch with a leather-upholstered panel and rose-gold profiling gives layering and depth to the window behind.

Back in the foyer, the swing doors open to the living-cum-dining room, awash in a soothing brown hue. “This space has a triple-height skylight accentuated with a light installation called the Brahmasthan,” Garg says.
Sectional sofas, wing chairs and consoles add to the overall gloss and shimmer of the material and colour palette used in this space.

Behind the living room is a ten-seater dining table, illuminated by pendant lights. “A screen of brown columns in this area partially masks a stairway that leads to the first floor, which is entirely dedicated to bedrooms,” Garg says.
The first floor has a master bedroom, children’s rooms and three extra bedrooms. “While the theme of the house was kept uniform, various unique elements were added to each bedroom to make them stand out,” Garg says.
In the master bedroom, the bed is finished in glossy grey lacquer with gold detailing while the headboard is upholstered in grey velvet highlighted with pink piping. The decorative arc behind the bed and the vintage chandelier give a majestic, palace-like feel to the room. On both sides of the bed are hand-painted lotus motifs with pink petals and gold leaves.
Beside the bed is a cosy window seating area, perfect for two. “The master bedroom has a poetic expression of traditional Rajasthan and a modern grey rhapsody,” Garg says.

The daughter’s bedroom is a large space in a pink shell. The built-in drawers, both in the bed and the side table, offer plenty of storage for knick-knacks. The floral headboard, the pink bedspread and the custom study table in light brown with intricate legs contribute to the cheerful tone of the room.
The second floor has a large room comprising two informal lounges and a bar designed with a boho-luxe vibe.
This space breaks away from tradition and brings in a more contemporary style. “The dark flooring lays the base for bright colours and patterns. The central brass bar is lavishly long and divides the two seating areas – on one side is a modish corner drenched in blue and black and on the other, a kitschy lounge with retro furniture in bright hues,” Garg says.

This lounge area, marked by the wall-mounted TV, has custom-made furniture, upholstered in aqua and white fabric, with a backdrop of black-and-white chevron wallpaper.
The second lounge area is a confluence of myriad hues. “The khat (a low, wood-frame bench made of woven rope, usually found in homes in villages) with red legs adds a rustic touch while plump chairs upholstered in embroidered cotton velvet accentuate the eccentric decor of the area,” Garg says. All furniture is sourced from Jodhpur, highlighted with a custom finish.
The empty mirror frame propped against the wall, the wooden coffee table, the ethnic-style carpet and the long, metallic-hue curtains, all contribute to the ‘old meets new’ look of this space. “Design, to me, is the consequence of balance. Be it contrast, conflict or rhythm, the final visual appeal has to gesture balance. In this home, the blending of different styles and their interaction clearly comes through,” Garg says.

On the left is the formal living room and at right, on the other side of the swing doors, is the private living-cum-dining room. “International finesse and Indian art, textile, crafts and culture were my source of inspiration for this particular project. The hand-painted elements around the house pay an ode to traditional art, but with a modern approach. A need to create a transitional theme laid the foundation for this home’s design,” Garg says.
