The client couple had a straightforward brief in mind – they wanted a home that was regal and luxurious. Interior designer Adetee Sawhaney of Altus - Luxury Living was given a free hand in terms of defining the look of the various spaces “however, the clients had very clear opinions on the designs of the individual pieces that would adorn their house. This made the entire exercise a bit challenging yet exciting,” she says.

The entrance door opens into the foyer with a seating area. “The sofas are imprinted with animal figurines in brass, with gold leafing on the legs and fabric in chenille. The door is customised in a semi-precious stone, malachite, with printing on the glass,” says Sawhaney.

The entrance lobby opens up to a double-height space – a brightly coloured floor-to-ceiling feature wall immediately catches attention. The large cascading chandelier and gold leaf work on the ceiling grab the eye next.

“Since the clients have their roots in Rajasthan, I wanted to give them something which would be close to their culture and heritage. The larger-than-life artwork is hand-painted, with inspirations from Rajputana art and architecture. The wall depicts the famous step-well of Jaipur, also known as a baoli, with motifs taken from the famous Sheesh Mahal. The other painted elements include brass door knockers which were used in the old forts and palaces,” Sawhaney says.

The artwork’s backdrop is in chevron pattern, with a large lotus in full bloom. Also, a handcrafted mirror-work jali has been fixed in the centre with the entire background in gold leaf. “To complete the look, we placed a Venetian console here, with a rich malachite stone top, and inlaid with Nandis. The artwork runs across the beam which has been highlighted with bougainvilleas and a self pattern,” says Sawhaney.

The living room is divided into two seating areas – one has Zanzibar veneer on the ceiling and a cosy fireplace (above). The other (below) has a higher ceiling with hand-painting in gold leaf on the borders of the ceiling. “Every piece of furniture is customised and designed in great detail. Centre tables in gold mirror with a pink quartz top, and an all-white centre table in mother-of-pearl and crystal, are the highlights of the living room furniture. The tables incorporate many materials, such as semi-precious stones, inlays, mirror and acrylic, fused intricately, showcasing the best of craftsmanship. Every item – chandelier, carpet, table lamp, art piece, even the cushions – has been been specially curated for this home,” says Sawhaney.

The dining room is separated from the informal lounge with jalis in stone “sandwiched with mirrors, flanking both sides of the entrance. A beautiful geometrical pattern has been inlaid on the floor beneath the dining space. The entire table is made in crystal cut glass. This is the first time we have so daringly made a massive table completely out of glass and mirror,” Sawhaney says.

The borders of the ceilings in the living and dining area have been hand-painted with neo-classical ornate motifs. Large Venetian mirrors adorn various spaces in the house.

In the lounge, the silver-leaf unit under the TV spans the entire wall, “and it does more than enough justice to the 75-inch plasma TV,” says Sawhaney.

The master bedroom on the ground floor is adorned with a feature wall full of intricate details. Brass jali panels in a ‘beehive’ pattern have been fixed from floor to ceiling on both sides of the bed. A larger-than-life brass moulding frames the space behind the leather-panelled bed back, and a rich chenille fabric has been fixed in between the jali and the frame in order to soften the look. To add still more variety, the custom-made nightstands are oval, and detailed in leather and high-gloss polish, with customised brass hardware.

The flooring throughout the penthouse is in white marble “because it gives a feeling of spaciousness and a seemingly natural flow from one space to another,” Sawhaney says. Clean geometrical lines in ‘Cosy Grey’ stone break the monotony of the otherwise white space.

The staircase leading to the bedrooms has glass and rose-gold metal railings that add a sleek contemporary touch.

The son’s bedroom on the first floor radiates a luxe vibe. The bed headboard is designed in leather panelling with brass and grey glass detailing. The nightstands are further embellished with semi-precious smoky quartz stone. Small touches have been added to the furniture, such as pleating on the chaise and the sofa to add glamour to the room. Last but not least is the sleek coffee table made in brass, quartz and high-gloss wood.

The lobby on the first floor is accentuated with a bright sit-out area, with deep-red armchairs and a gold-tinted console. This space opens up to the terrace that has been landscaped with colourful vertical gardens, a heated pool with a jacuzzi, pergolas and a bar.
