This 7,000 square foot space located is a modern weekend getaway for a modern family of four. The owners were looking for a designer who could fuse their love of art and elegant furnishings with the practicality that would fit their lifestyle. They owned the land and wanted to build their new home from the ground up. Betty Wasserman Art & Interiors, Ltd. was a natural fit to make their vision a reality. Upon entering the house, you are immediately drawn to the clean, contemporary space that greets your eye. A curtain wall of glass with sliding doors, along the back of the house, allows everyone to enjoy the harbor views and a calming connection to the outdoors from any vantage point, simultaneously allowing watchful parents to keep an eye on the children in the pool while relaxing indoors. Here, as in all her projects, Betty focused on the interaction between pattern and texture, industrial and organic. The unique site, 11 acres on a peninsula with breathtaking views of the ocean, inspired Meyer & Meyer to break the mold of waterside shingle-style homes. The estate is comprised of a main house, guest house, and existing bunker. The design of the main house involves projecting wings that appear to grow out of the hillside and spread outward toward three sides of ocean views. Architecture and landscape merge as exterior stairways and bridges provide connections to a network of paths leading to the beaches at each point. An enduring palette of local stone, salt-washed wood, and purple-green slate reflects the muted and changeable seaside hues. This beach-side retreat offers ever-changing views from windows, terraces, decks, and pathways. Tucked into the design are unexpected touches such as a hideaway wine room and a nautically-inspired crow’s nest.

A meadow garden surrounds the property and provides a transition zone between the lawn and woodland border. Installing a meadow allowed us to reduce the amount of traditional lawn around the house, an important factor for this LEED Gold certified property. The meadow is low maintenance (mowed once a year), is drought tolerant, and provides an incredible show of color throughout the summer and fall.

The homeowners selected Minneapolis Interior Designer Brandi Hagen to make their interior home design more hip. Originally built in the 1970s, a contemporary retro theme complemented this newly remodeled home. beautiful, yet practical, the interior design holds up to heavy use among four active boys. The ultra-suede sofa is durable enough to withstand routine scrubbings. Commercial – grade carpets bound into area rugs accommodate high foot and Hot Wheels traffic. Brandi retained neutral tones in the home’s fixtures, with grey walls, warm woods and mellow upholsteries. Colorful accents, including rugs, artwork and pillows to jazz up the space white providing far-out focal points. A red birch wall provides separation between the more formal and casual spaces but creatively disguises storage that is found with the touch of a finger. The Master Bathroom in this house, built in 1967 by an architect for his own family, had adequate space and an existing skylight, but was rooted in the 1960s with it’s dark marbled laminate tops and dated cabinetry and tile. The clients and I worked closely together to update the space for their 21st century lifestyle, which meant updating the divided layout and removing an unnecessary bidet.
