This 1920's Georgian-style home in Hillsborough was stripped down to the frame and remodeled. It features beautiful cabinetry and millwork throughout. A marriage of antiques, art and custom furniture pieces were selected to create a harmonious home. Bi-fold Nana doors allow for an open space floor plan. Coffered ceilings to match the traditional style of the main house. Galbraith & Paul, hand blocked print fabrics. Limestone flooring.

Bathroom finishes include an exquisite counter top made out of semi-precious quartz stones with a translucent quality; shimmery crystal vanity fixture; beautiful glass tile used as a dominant accent in the vanity area. It’s an oft-heard design objective among folks building or renovating a home these days: “We want to bring the outdoors in!” Indeed, visually or spatially connecting the interior of a home with its surroundings is a great way to make spaces feel larger, improve daylight levels and, best of all, embrace Nature. Most of us enjoy being outside, and when we get a sense of that while inside it has a profoundly positive effect on the experience of being at home.

This project aims to be the first residence in San Francisco that is completely self-powering and carbon neutral. The architecture has been developed in conjunction with the mechanical systems and landscape design, each influencing the other to arrive at an integrated solution. Working from the historic façade, the design preserves the traditional formal parlors transitioning to an open plan at the central stairwell which defines the distinction between eras. The new floor plates act as passive solar collectors and radiant tubing redistributes collected warmth to the original, North facing portions of the house. Careful consideration has been given to the envelope design in order to reduce the overall space conditioning needs, retrofitting the old and maximizing insulation in the new.
