This project features an award winning front facade make over. The existing mansard roof was framed over to create a new look that provides some solid curb appeal! The interior of the home did not need to be modified to accommodate this renovation, since all of the construction occurred on the outside of the home. John Ray Photography

Simplified lines come together to create dramatic planes and volumes across the exterior of the home. While Stein's designs often incorporate wavy roof lines, this home was designed to mimic the leaves of the Tulip Poplar trees, some of which still remain on the property. Mr. and Mrs. Page commissioned me to design a home with an open floor plan and an Arts and Crafts design aesthetic. Because the retired couple meant to make this house their "forever home", I incorporated aging-in-place principles. Although the house clocks in at around 2,200 s.f., the massing and siting makes it appear much larger. I minimized circulation space and expressed the interior program through the forms of the exterior. Copious number of windows allow for constant connection to the rural outdoor setting as you move throughout the house.

This home was constructed with care and has an exciting amount of symmetry. The colors are a neutral dark brown which really brings out the off white trimmings. Photo by: Thomas Graham
