The master bathroom was designed for clients who have a true appreciation for clean lines, symmetry, and simple beauty. They desired a space that checked the box on each of these aesthetic details while maximizing function and storage within each area of this space. This was achieved by providing separate his and hers vanities, a designated makeup station, ample tall storage, and a feature wall to backdrop the bathtub. If standing in the center of this bathroom, one would find that both sides of this bathroom are a mirror image of one another. The makeup vanity is centered on the front wall and is captured by identical floor to ceiling linen storage cabinets with a combination of drawer and door storage. Tall narrow columns were set on the sides of these linen cabinets, which each have a hidden frameless flush inset touch latch door concealing medicine cabinet storage. These columns are finished in a dark textured laminate with vertical grain to emphasize the ceiling height and give a clean contrast to the light linen cabinet finish throughout the rest of the space. Back-to-back are the his and hers vanities that provide quite a bit more storage. Bringing in the element of aged brass cabinet hardware and decorative light fixtures added the perfect amount of soft glam to complete this elegant bathroom.

We began with a structurally sound 1950’s home. The owners sought to capture views of mountains and lake with a new second story, along with a complete rethinking of the plan. Basement walls and three fireplaces were saved, along with the main floor deck. The new second story provides a master suite, and professional home office for him. A small office for her is on the main floor, near three children’s bedrooms. The oldest daughter is in college; her room also functions as a guest bedroom. A second guest room, plus another bath, is in the lower level, along with a media/playroom and an exercise room. The original carport is down there, too, and just inside there is room for the family to remove shoes, hang up coats, and drop their stuff. The focal point of the home is the flowing living/dining/family/kitchen/terrace area. The living room may be separated via a large rolling door. Pocketing, sliding glass doors open the family and dining area to the terrace, with the original outdoor fireplace/barbeque. When slid into adjacent wall pockets, the combined opening is 28 feet wide.

We took a large kitchen that could be overwhelming and transformed the space to create a sense of intimacy by using earthy materials like the wood beams on the ceiling and wooden cabinetry and mixes of natural stones. The other challenge is the request from the client to have a contemporary approach to the design but making sure that it is still warm and inviting for their use. -Contrasting materials like the heavy blackened steel and granite were used with soft, natural materials to create a balance between serenity and masculinity. What is unique is the play of mix of materials in a variety of finishes from natural sandblasted granite to a honed limestone combine with a solid surface material Caesar Stone. The cabinets (cabinet maker-Mueller Nichols) has two different wood combination from a lighter vertical Eucalyptus and darker vertical Walnut (running horizontal on the cabinets) But the look is subtle since the mix is still overall earthy, natural and tone on tone change. The old beams in the ceiling were used. It was painted over the years so we stripped it down to the natural material and added cross beams to create the grid patterns. Rustic cross beams combine with beautiful phoenician plaster on the ceilings. Built in speakers that can be troweled over with plastering so the speakers are totally hidden in the ceilings. Multi level islands to serve multiple activities from cleaning, prepping, chopping and eating. Butcher block lower level for easy chopping and cantilivered to create a more dynamic and sculptural quality. ce the clients really cook in this kitchen that the list of appliances for extraordinary. Pizza oven, built in coffee maker, steamer, double convection ovens, 6 burner pro style cooktop, 48 inch refrigerator, 2 refrigerator drawers, 2 dishwashers, wine refrigerators etc... Contrasting materials like the heavy dark steel and granite were used with soft, natural materials to create a balance between serenity and masculinity. The seamless windows highlight and connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The clients are gourmet cooks that enjoy entertaining and cooking so many types of cooking equipments like a six burner cook top with grill, a brick oven and a speed oven as well as a pantry that is connected to the kitchen were used. There are also two islands in the kitchen which serves different functions. One is used mainly for prepping and cleaning while the other is used as a serving area and a place to gather. A cigar-box-style cabinet in walnut sets off the granite countertop on the island, and a tongue-and-groove finish shows craftsmanship. "We layered materials, textures and colors to create a space that was natural and inviting, yet in keeping with the modern style of the rest of the house," says the designer. Using different kinds of wood and stains brings a sense of intimacy to this large walk-in pantry. Sandbox Studio®Sandbox Studio®
A unique and character-filled home in Sydney’s inner-west suburb of Forest Lodge, Inner-western is an example of living well, in less space. Upon meeting the clients, it was evident that this would be a special project. They’re a creative couple with an eye for funky furniture and art with a ‘Western’ edge. The previously tired terrace now shines with personality in every room. Due to the strict heritage controls over the property, no additional floor area was created, instead, it was an exercise in recompositing of the existing layout, improving the flow through the home, and providing adequate space for their two young children, as well as spaces for their work and hobbies. Upon entering the pastel-pink front door, instead of being confronted with a dark hallway typical of a terrace home, you’re welcomed by a generous volume of well-lit space, and an open-tread feature staircase. The original ceiling was completely removed to create a double-height void over the entry. A skylight positioned above the staircase allows light to filter through into the home. Upstairs is a quiet attic art studio, with views over the Jacaranda trees beyond. The lowest level contains a new built-in dining area and kitchen which are directly connected to the private rear garden. The efficient floor plan contains 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, laundry with W.C., kitchen, dining area and living room. Finishes throughout include original exposed brickwork, light oak timber herringbone flooring, and touches of pastel colours, complemented by a colourful collection of artwork and objects.
Quince Reverse Shed Eichler
Quince Reverse Shed Eichler

Reverse Shed Eichler This project is part tear-down, part remodel. The original L-shaped plan allowed the living/ dining/ kitchen wing to be completely re-built while retaining the shell of the bedroom wing virtually intact. The rebuilt entertainment wing was enlarged 50% and covered with a low-slope reverse-shed roof sloping from eleven to thirteen feet. The shed roof floats on a continuous glass clerestory with eight foot transom. Cantilevered steel frames support wood roof beams with eaves of up to ten feet. An interior glass clerestory separates the kitchen and livingroom for sound control. A wall-to-wall skylight illuminates the north wall of the kitchen/family room. New additions at the back of the house add several “sliding” wall planes, where interior walls continue past full-height windows to the exterior, complimenting the typical Eichler indoor-outdoor ceiling and floor planes. The existing bedroom wing has been re-configured on the interior, changing three small bedrooms into two larger ones, and adding a guest suite in part of the original garage. A previous den addition provided the perfect spot for a large master ensuite bath and walk-in closet. Natural materials predominate, with fir ceilings, limestone veneer fireplace walls, anigre veneer cabinets, fir sliding windows and interior doors, bamboo floors, and concrete patios and walks. From a derelict house to a modern residence, Queens Park has been transformed. The modern architectural design visually juxtaposes the adjacent heritage items, whilst referencing both their forms and materials to ensure integration into the streetscape. The simple proportions and neutral colours used provide a timeless quality to the design. The double height void inside the residence is central to the design and a welcome innovation to such a contained site. Sustainability features within the home with the inclusion of a rainwater reuse tank, high star rated tapware + fixtures, LED and low energy lighting, natural materials and integrated sun shading.

Vintage Cellars - Luxury Custom Wine Cellars OCVintage Cellars - Luxury Custom Wine Cellars OC
This stunning glass enclosed modern custom wine cellar was designed and installed by Vintage Cellars earlier this year. The Contemporary Custom Wine Room was fitted into an existing fireplace space, turning the visually unappealing sore thumb of the room into a magnificent show stopping centerpiece. This modern luxury condo on the 31st floor in a downtown San Diego high-rise acted as a very interesting project for the custom wine cellar design team at Vintage Cellars. The modern wine room space has dual paned, insulated glass but because of the nature of glass itself, the cooling unit was recommended to be oversized. The custom wine room space itself didn't have great options for venting the cooling unit due to the location on the 31st floor. The best option to vent was determined to treat the wine room as a wine cabinet, per se. The Cooling Unit, a CellarPro 1800 XTS, was placed in the ceiling, venting down cool air and circulating vented air back upward. The result works perfectly for a uniquely modern and contemporary space such as this. This fully enclosed, glass front custom wine cellar boasts a 300 bottle capacity with a sleek, modern, label forward feel that ULTRA Wine Peg racking is known for. The center section is a double stacked full reveal display row, showcasing some of the homeowner's finer wines. Though no particular space was made within the wine racking area, the design of this modern custom wine cellar was pushed back a couple of feet so that wine case storage could be an option between the glass front and the custom racking. Additionally, the clean feel goes even further upon looking for the entrance into this wine cellar. The flat panel on the furthest left side opens slowly and almost magically when pushed in slightly. A great, modern touch! A gorgeous, modern condo such as this is just begging to have a custom wine cellar. This space, with big help from this contemporary wine room, screams luxury upon entering. The clean, modern and sleek style within the home has found its match with an equally stunning custom wine room. Vintage Cellars has built gorgeous custom wine cellars and wine storage rooms across the United States and World for over 25 years. Carefully sited onto its environment, this dwelling was placed to reveal a magnificent vista. Maximizing the use of the site by creating stepped terraces that envelope the residence and frame the spectacular views. The long reflecting pool provides its orientation amongst the sweeping panorama of the surrounding hills that enhance the relationship of the interior and exterior spaces of this multi-story home. The dynamic thrust of the soaring inverted roof meets the landscape beneath a dominant overhang. The result is a sense of protected openness and freedom within expansive interior space surrounded by glass. www.bernardandre.com

An abundance of living space is only part of the appeal of this traditional French county home. Strong architectural elements and a lavish interior design, including cathedral-arched beamed ceilings, hand-scraped and French bleed-edged walnut floors, faux finished ceilings, and custom tile inlays add to the home's charm. This home features heated floors in the basement, a mirrored flat screen television in the kitchen/family room, an expansive master closet, and a large laundry/crafts room with Romeo & Juliet balcony to the front yard. The gourmet kitchen features a custom range hood in limestone, inspired by Romanesque architecture, a custom panel French armoire refrigerator, and a 12 foot antiqued granite island. Every child needs his or her personal space, offered via a large secret kids room and a hidden passageway between the kids' bedrooms. A 1,000 square foot concrete sport court under the garage creates a fun environment for staying active year-round. The fun continues in the sunken media area featuring a game room, 110-inch screen, and 14-foot granite bar. Story - Midwest Home Magazine Photos - Todd Buchanan Interior Designer - Anita Sullivan
