Located in Toronto’s Beaches district, 150_W addresses the challenges of maximizing southern exposure within an east-west oriented mid-lot while exploring opportunities for extended outdoor living spaces designed for the Canadian climate. The building’s plan and section is focused around a south-facing side-yard terrace creating an L-shaped cantilevered volume which helps shelter it from the winter winds while leaving it open to the warmth of the winter sun. This side terrace engages the site and home both spatially and environmentally, extending the interior living environment to a protected outdoor space for year-round use, while providing the framework for integrated passive design strategies. Photo Credit: Holger Hobenaus Description: The owners of this home travel extensively and appreciate the great outdoors. Global travels shaped their desire for a home that embraces nature. The bridge connecting the sleeping and living structures allows cool ocean breezes to pass from the marsh to the front yard; decks and stairs to pool and terrace visually connect inside and out. Most walls from the street are solid, providing privacy, yet they open to rooms of glass, timber and soaring ceilings with views of Bass and Cinder Creeks and Folly Island.

This addition replaced a 2-car garage and pool house with a lavish spa, guest house and 4-car garage, accompanied by a new landscaped terrace with pool, hot tub and outdoor dining area. A covered walk-way was replaced with a fully enclosed glass link that provides year-round access between the addition and main house, and provides a secondary entrance to the home. The ground floor of the addition has the feel of a Scandinavian spa, featuring fitness equipment, massage room, steam room and a versatile gathering room with amenities for food preparation and indoor lounging. With the patio doors open, the west facing rooms each expand onto the pool terrace.
