Mumbai Houzz: This 935-Sq-Ft Apartment Is Light & Bright
Lahar Mehta Design Studio sets up a warm and inviting home that basks in its neutral material palette
“The homeowners wanted a warm, inviting space that felt like home. They wanted an open and airy flat with clean-lined, minimalist aesthetics so they would not miss their sizeable family homes in Delhi and Kochi. The guest room would host their parents and the kid’s room would double as a study till their daughter grew older,” says Lahar Mehta, director and principal architect-cum-designer of Lahar Mehta Design Studio.
A neutral colour palette of textured cement walls and beige Botticino marble flooring defines the living room. A customised wall installation made from apple fibre flats doubles as an artwork and a dramatic light.

Patterned blinds allow light to filter in softly through the day. The faux ceiling with recessed cove lighting adds depth to the decor. Layered tones of muted orange in the artwork and sofa add depth and vitality to the otherwise minimalist living room.

“With its dropped scale, a dramatic black dome light gives a sense of intimacy to the dining area. The table, chairs and bench are customised with playful red and orange patterns – complementing the artwork that flanks the dining table. The textural wall provides continuity to the material story,” says Mehta.

The kitchen connects to the living room via a service window framed in live-edge wood and through transparent glass doors. Live or natural edge is a term used to define wood that has been sliced off a log and the natural, uneven edges left as they were. A backsplash of custom-printed tiles with scaled grid lines offsets the plain white cabinet shutters.

Custom-built teak furniture takes centre stage in the master bedroom. A wooden bench by the window and artwork on the wall tie the look together.
An interesting interplay of light and shadows fills the room through the patterned window blinds. The dark blue of the bed and vibrant colours of the picture frames and the bench create an lively interplay of contrasts and patterns without clutter.

“The master wardrobe is a statement piece with wooden slats and acrylic, giving a lightness and transparency. Hanging lamps on both sides of the bed function as reading lights and also a visual balancing element,” says Mehta.
Oak and cane furniture creates a warm palette in the guest bedroom. The headboard is woven cane and customised by Baro. Vibrant bedding, cushions and natural light induce a cheerful and welcoming ambience.

The woven-cane shutters in the wardrobe evoke a vintage vibe.
The daughter’s room, which doubles a study, features a Baro desk and chair. A wall-mounted custom puja cabinet shows how to make the most of the space taken by load-bearing columns. The blinds, patterned with little yellow parrots, are from Russell Street.
