Actor Kangana Ranaut's Home Is Dreamy & On Top of the World
Expansive, sun-lit, earthy & filled with restful spaces, this mountain holiday home designed by Shabnam Gupta is an idyllic cocoon
A nest in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, a meditative haven that ensures peace, calm and quietude … don’t we all dream of a space like that? Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, too, wanted a home away from home that would remove her from the hectic big-screen city life. “And thus, this house was envisioned; a home in the heart of Manali. The space caters to her wishes, of having a serene, quiet space, and is in perfect harmony with its surroundings,” says Shabnam Gupta of Shabnam Gupta Interiors and The Orange Lane.
The entrance porch is marked by a white door and matching windows with louvred shutters and a metal roof above.

The front door is surrounded by panelled walls and leads to the entrance passage. Right in front of the door is a console, above which hangs an artwork from a local artist, says Gupta.
The living room on the ground floor has an earthy palette and modern seating, while overhead is a statement ceiling. “This vintage classic mountain home’s living room has an old timber ceiling and wooden flooring, and the introduction of colour is through the upholstery in leather and fabric. The hanging chandelier and piano add to the charm of the room,” says Gupta.

The living room is connected to a conservatory, a space enclosed in glass, perfect for a sunny sit-out in cold weather, which further connects to the deck area. “This is an open-to-sky space with stone flooring. The best part about this space is how the glass walls continue into the ceiling, creating a space that is completely among the mountains yet enclosed,” Gupta says.

The bar next to the living room is a compact space dotted with striking pendant lights.

The staircase outside the living room is an accent feature, thanks to the wall art. “The staircase is the central space as it connects the two zones of the house. When moving from one area to the other, it’s important to continue the design language. This is a grand structure, built with wooden treads and risers, where the railing, too, shows detailing. The wall along the staircase houses locally sourced pictures that are a reflection of Manali and the photo frames are from Kangana’s travels,” Gupta says.
All the bedrooms are located on the first floor. The guest bedroom is a cosy, compact space awash in shades of blue-green. “The idea was to keep it very neutral yet in sync with the mountain charm of the home,” Gupta says.

On the same floor is a private den embellished with patterns, textures and earthy hues. “This room is a hangout and unwinding zone, with a divan-style bed and quirky wall art,” says Gupta.

Ranaut’s bedroom is a refined, simply done space with beautiful, old-style furniture an elaborate bed, with matching customised dresser and wardrobe. The lamps on either side of the bed were sourced from Chor Bazar and customised; the bedside tables and bed were made on site.

“Balconies are special spaces in a home, as they create a seamless connection for private areas with nature outside. The balcony here is an extension of the bedroom that reaches out to the surrounding mountains. The flooring in stone and the artworks outside add a little quirk to this peaceful space,” Gupta says.

The expansive property with sloping roofs offers panoramic views of the mountains and nature around. “The exterior is in grey clay tiles that give a soothing appeal to the facade. The driveway is in stone, with a porch area in the front,” says Gupta.
