There is nothing specific in building reg's or gas safe regulations to stop you placing non-combustible material above the hob. Whether it is sensible is another question!
However, it is of course commonplace to have cupboards above the worktop, albeit interrupted by the rangehood normally located above the hob. In our case the shelf replaces the extract, which is fine because it is made of marble (non-combustible). Best, Stephen
