Last piece of cabinet would not fit, opening 3/8 inch too narrow...

So we ordered these off the shelf cabinets and use a GC who is doing our house renovation project to install them. The cabinet seller came to do the measurement, however, his measurement was off a little along the wall where most of the top cabinets were hang. Problem is that side of the wall has an edge/side wall, so the last piece of 36inch cabinet could not fit in (off by 3/8 inch).

The cabinet guy was blaming GC for not double check the measurement/size before the ordering since he gae my GC the layout illustration. GC blamed the retailer for the off measurement and claimed he was never asked to verify those numbers. GC was suggesting replacing the 36 inch cabinet with a 33 inch and adding filler from each side. He was able to fit the base cabinets in (guess more wiggle room with the dishwasher opening). My question is if this remedy would look absolutely horrible.

If your top cabinets are all in same color then it would be hardly noticeable.

BTW, did you do any wall tiling work post measurement of cabinets. If yes, see if those can be removed. As Vendors usually keep a buffer of 100 mm at least, not sure why that wasn't done.

However, please consider this suggestion: as per the above design, you have a shutter over the sink it would be more cost effective to reduce the size of those instead of changing the last one to 33" .

Another one that could also be replaced is the single door box above the dishwasher.

Why did u guys think the above sink cabinet was not normal? I understand the preference of having clear headspace, but Google says the range of space there is 24 to 36 inches, apparently he used the low end of that range. It is a 30inch one above sink, leaving 24 inch above countertop.

The other q is if I shrink the width there, the cabinet right to the sink all shift left, would it look more odd

/Misaligned with respect to the base cabinets compared to only shrinking the right most cabinet?

One possibility would be to swap the living room and the dining room. Since the current living room is larger than the current dining room you could still keep some comfortable seating (couch and upholstered chairs?) against the front wall for a keeping room/dining concept. Then your new dining areas (kitchen and dining room) and living areas (living and drawing room) would have good flow between them, which would work well both for family and entertaining. You could also add some builtin bookshelves in the drawing room or new living room to create a library area to add another fun element to the living areas. These bookshelves could be against the long walls in the drawing room, around the window with a window seat in the living room (former dining room), or built to create some separation in the open area between the drawing room and living room/stair area. Your plan seems to show some sort of builtin there, but I'm not sure what it is.

I think a comfortable distance between the island and the counter is around 42". It seems that you have only 30" between your cook top and the counter. I might be a little too tight. The wall between the entrance and the kitchen could be 4' long instead of 6', you would then be able to move the island a foot which would give you more room between the cook top and the island. Could you switch the location of the toilet and vanity in your dad's bathroom so your enter facing a vanity instead of a toilet which is a lot nicer.

Tsilanko, I would always recommend professional installation where needed. But what I am doing here is suggesting that WHEN you are planning to build or renovate, to consider how your plans will affect you in 20 or 30 years time. Split levels are very hep when you are young. A kitchen 3 steps down at 30 is rarely a problem, but might be a hazard at 60, or, as Marjie1059 suggested, if you break a leg. ... All my parents' homes were terrible for old people. They were forced to move to a bungalow in extreme old sge because the location and design of their home was more suitable for an active young couple with a large family than for an elderly couple with stroke disabilities. I would not want to move again, so my present home has features built in that make ageing in place simpler. Mostly small changes, like grab rails, and lever handles on doors and faucets. A major disability suddenly suffered requires major changes if permanent. I did look at this because it came up in the discussion, but if you look at the heading, Planning for Disability, it means just that. Plan ahead so you don't have to make expensive changes later on. But thank you for your advice, yes, major changes are not in the DIY domain.

I suggest you follow the step-by-step guide for creating storage cabinets under the bathroom sink. Take proper measurements - Measure the available available space in height, width and height. Cut Plywood to size - With a circular saw and framing square, cut all the required pieces out. You can use a sliding compound saw as an alternative. Attach the base and sides - Start assembling the sink cabinets by placing the bottom piece of plywood sheet on a flat surface. Attach the back and top boards - Place the plywood sheet for the top part of the cabinet and attach wood screws to connect it to both the sides. Turn the back faces of the cabinet upwards. Keep the back piece over the structure and fix it into place with wood screws. Attach shelves - Place the cabinet in an upright position to install the shelves. Slide a shelf into the structure so it is flush against the back. Attach door - Keep both hinges of the door on the same side of the plywood sheet. Drill them using wood screws into place. Now keep the door over the cabinet structure, extend the hinges to one of the side panels and fix them to make them secure. Fix a hasp closure on the other side of the door, placing it in the center of the hinges.

The over the sink one is 50 cheaper than the 36 inch right most one. Cabinet guys want 25% restocking fee..

On the contrary, If you look from the left it should align with the base cabinet because they are in same size. Most likely, it will go off by 3/8 of an inch after the dish washer (as it has been wiggled in). It is too small a difference to be noticed by average person because they are at different heights.

We are suggesting to change either the cabinet above sink or the single box above right of dishwasher. It will be easier and the filler will be least noticeable above the sink as the shutters are already of a different size.

Good news, is that you may have the cabinet boxes already. You can check by placing them starting from the left most wall whether the above suggestion works for you.
