One idea I had in mind is to install metal shelves that are attachable to the insider of the vanity door. This way when the door swings open I have access to shampoo bottles etc. IMHO A vanity with no drawers is of no use to women.

I think so. They are clean, shiny, symmetrical and with the popularity of pedastal sinks they should be right in style. Is that a floor drain to the right of the sink? I'd be inclined to put something in front of it that could be easily moved.

Hooks could be hung from the side slats for a blow dryer, etc.

Depends on whether you want everything stowed out of sight between use or not.

Oh! The photo was there when I clicked submit. It's a narrow free standing piece with three open shelves, if you count the top. I was also thinking about an old fashioned ladies lingerie cabinet or a small night stand. Something that can be painted and you don't mind if it gets a little wet.

I would use wood because it's easier to refinish than metal (with the inevitable water damage) but looks better than plastic office drawer storage on wheels. I don't think something stained to show wood grain would match your style, instead you can use it as a color accent, perhaps matching your favorite towels.

I suggest you see a local custom cabinet designer/builder to discuss the possibilities here - the main concern will be making sure that the plumbing is accounted for - also keep in mind that just because there are 6-7 inches on either side, there will need to be inches underneath for things like the drawer slides, the sides of the drawers and doors, etc. It may not be possible to get two drawer banks and a door under that space - not saying it's impossible, but not probable...have a chat with a local cabinet person and see what they have to say - keep in mind framed cabinetry is different than European frameless, so variations in how they're built or would need to be installed should also be kept in mind. Talking to a professional who can see it for themselves, get professional measurements, etc. would be very smart!

I suggest you follow the step-by-step guide for creating storage cabinets under the bathroom sink.

Take proper measurements - Measure the available available space in height, width and height.

Cut Plywood to size - With a circular saw and framing square, cut all the required pieces out. You can use a sliding compound saw as an alternative.

Attach the base and sides - Start assembling the sink cabinets by placing the bottom piece of plywood sheet on a flat surface.

Attach the back and top boards - Place the plywood sheet for the top part of the cabinet and attach wood screws to connect it to both the sides. Turn the back faces of the cabinet upwards. Keep the back piece over the structure and fix it into place with wood screws.

Attach shelves - Place the cabinet in an upright position to install the shelves. Slide a shelf into the structure so it is flush against the back.

Attach door - Keep both hinges of the door on the same side of the plywood sheet. Drill them using wood screws into place. Now keep the door over the cabinet structure, extend the hinges to one of the side panels and fix them to make them secure. Fix a hasp closure on the other side of the door, placing it in the center of the hinges.
