Mix of generations, styles and envies, welcome to a busy family home! For the parents' delight, we created a chef's kitchen out of solid oak and painted in a period style. For the young generation coming up through the house, we ensured the traditional was mixed with up to date technology. For everyone to come together in this new space, the open plan kitchen was also designed to host the family dining room.

A grey-blue painted open floor plan home that incorporates a feminine touch is what makes this space transitional. The kitchen and family room remodel transformed the home into a new, fresh space with a great backbone for clean lined furnishings and modern accessories. The young homeowner can utilize the many seating areas for entertaining and parties. The clean, white kitchen is an open space with sharp lined shaker style cabinetry and a unique small sitting area for dining.

This used to be a completely unfinished basement with concrete floors, cinder block walls, and exposed floor joists above. The homeowners wanted to finish the space to include a wet bar, powder room, separate play room for their daughters, bar seating for watching tv and entertaining, as well as a finished living space with a television with hidden surround sound speakers throughout the space. They also requested some unfinished spaces; one for exercise equipment, and one for HVAC, water heater, and extra storage. With those requests in mind, I designed the basement with the above required spaces, while working with the contractor on what components needed to be moved. The homeowner also loved the idea of sliding barn doors, which we were able to use as at the opening to the unfinished storage/HVAC area.

By choosing affordable units and doing much of the work themselves, the couple were able to achieve a quality kitchen within their frugal budget. Maintaining the neutral look through the kitchen, The Williamsons selected speckled granite, and espresso finish cabinets for some contrast. "We chose the most affordable cabinets offered," explains Catherine, "but got them in an espresso finish so off the bat they looked nice. We balanced them out with granite countertops, which cost us less than $500 because we cut and installed them ourselves."
Modern is Modern Again in Portola Valley

For this remodel in Portola Valley, California we were hired to rejuvenate a circa 1980 modernist house clad in deteriorating vertical wood siding. The house included a greenhouse style sunroom which got so unbearably hot as to be unusable. We opened up the floor plan and completely demolished the sunroom, replacing it with a new dining room open to the remodeled living room and kitchen. We added a new office and deck above the new dining room and replaced all of the exterior windows, mostly with oversized sliding aluminum doors by Fleetwood to open the house up to the wooded hillside setting. Stainless steel railings protect the inhabitants where the sliding doors open more than 50 feet above the ground below. We replaced the wood siding with stucco in varying tones of gray, white and black, creating new exterior lines, massing and proportions. We also created a new master suite upstairs and remodeled the existing powder room. Architecture by Mark Brand Architecture. Antique white kitchen cabinets with pewter glaze surround adventurous crackle glass, creamy African Tobacco Granite, and a 6" wedge of glass mosaic embedded with smoky quartz rhinestones. This eclectic, very feminine palette, is anchored by the more masculine stone-like grey porcelain wall tile set on the diagonal and professional grade stainless appliances. photo by Tommie Milacci
