Front Entry through a Courtyard Gate

This unique single storey residence designed for a beachfront location, incorporates a tennis court adjacent to the home. The house has a linear plan which allows all rooms to have north facing windows, with views across the tennis court to the bushland beyond. The external living area incorporates retractable glass panels for protection from the SE breezes and adjustable external blinds to provide shading. Internal banquet seating allows the owners to enjoy a restaurant ambience while dining on their home cooked meals.

For this Boston-area former hunting lodge, featured in Outside the Not So Big House by Julie Moir Messervy and Sarah Susanka, JMMDS created a landscape design that anchors the house in the site and complements its Tuscan-inspired architectural update. The front door, seen here from inside the house, is aligned with the front gate, creating a formal, symmetrical entrance. The covered stoop is flanked by sidelights and potted topiaries. After the installation of their entry gate, the client requested a second project: a matching garden gate with fencing on the opposite side of the home. Built using the same materials and same techniques in order to carry over some of the elements from the entry gate over to this gate.

The Entryway's eight foot tall door, sidelights, and transom allow plenty of natural light to filter in. An open railing staircase to the finished Lower Level is adjacent to the entry.
