The design objective for this six acre ocean view parcel in Montecito was to create a literal replication of an 1800's California hacienda. Four adobe structures define the central courtyard while secondary terraces and walled gardens expand the living areas towards the views and morning light. Simple, rustic details and traditional, handmade materials evoke a lifestyle of a distant era.

The hillside garden responds to movement of the wind, flow of the water and warmth of the sun with an artful integration of storm water management practices. Rhythmic landforms and a grassy swale slow stormwater flow, allowing it to percolate into the ground and divert it away from the house. The meandering path and sitting area nestle in a warm pallet of colors maximizing the use of the side property and views of the San Francisco Bay. Low maintenance and drought & deer tolerant planting provide a gracious transition between the built environment and the adjoining openlands. Michele Lee Wilson Photography

Rarely observed, this home is found within the grounds of a secluded private gated community. The project involved a restoration to transform a landscape of less interest to an authentic “old world” environment. For those who have traveled the cobblestone roadways, found within European cities, this site would transport them back in time. Beginning with the drive and motor court fashioned of imported Belgium block granite pavers, the authenticity continues with the property’s lavishly designed boxwood hedge gardens, custom wrought iron gates, inviting conversation areas, and a formal “secret garden”. Day or night the flames of several gas copper lanterns flicker to offer a memorable experience or a fond remembrance of a past journey. LANDSCAPE DESIGN / BUILD R. Youngblood & Co.
