Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   My husband and I had the opportunity to completely gut and remodel a very tired 1950’s Garrison colonial. We knew that the idea of a semi-open floor plan would be ideal for our family. Space saving solutions started with the design of a banquet in the kitchen. The banquet’s focal point is the two stained glass windows on either end that help to capture daylight from the adjoining spaces. Material selections for the kitchen were driven by the desire for a bright, casual and uncomplicated look. The plan began with 3 large windows centered over a white farmhouse sink and overlooking the backyard. A large island acts as the kitchen’s work center and rounds out seating options in the room. White inset cabinetry is offset with a mix of materials including soapstone, cherry butcher block, stainless appliances, oak flooring and rustic white tiles that rise to the ceiling creating a dramatic backdrop for an arched range hood. Multiple mullioned glass doors keep the kitchen open, bright and airy. A palette of grayish greens and blues throughout the house helps to meld the white kitchen and trim detail with existing furnishings. In-cabinet lighting as well as task and undercabinet lighting complements the recessed can lights and help to complete the light and airy look of the space. Offering a beautiful view through a large window into the backyard, we knew we would highlight the window and design a new kitchen layout, around that window. The former kitchen felt closed in with super dark cabinets. Along with the homeowner, our team designed a light and airy kitchen, including a new pass through to the dining room. Closed off from the kitchen before, the pass through not only allows light to flow in from the beautiful bay window in the dining room, but if offers a functional countertop used for entertaining and serving guests. Not pictured is a drop zone, located immediately when you enter from the mudroom. Drop zones are fantastic for everyday items like keys, wallets, dog gear and more. We added an additional opening to the living room, right off the kitchen as well as a wet bar strategically placed outside the ever day kitchen work zone. Wet bars are fantastic for holding entertainment dishware, barware and appetizers! We finished the space with beautiful new hardwood floors throughout the entire first floor, except the tile in the mudroom.

Designed for a 1930s Portland, OR home, this kitchen remodel aims for a clean, timeless sensibility without sacrificing the space to generic modernism. Cherry cabinets, Ice Stone countertops and Heath tile add texture and variation in an otherwise sleek, pared down design. A custom built-in bench works well for eat-in breakfasts. Period reproduction lighting, Deco pulls, and a custom formica table root the kitchen to the origins of the home. All photos by Matt Niebuhr. www.mattniebuhr.com

Dwell Home - second floor
Dwell Home - second floor
Resolution: 4 ArchitectureResolution: 4 Architecture
The winning entry of the Dwell Home Design Invitational is situated on a hilly site in North Carolina among seven wooded acres. The home takes full advantage of it’s natural surroundings: bringing in the woodland views and natural light through plentiful windows, generously sized decks off the front and rear facades, and a roof deck with an outdoor fireplace. With 2,400 sf divided among five prefabricated modules, the home offers compact and efficient quarters made up of large open living spaces and cozy private enclaves. To meet the necessity of creating a livable floor plan and a well-orchestrated flow of space, the ground floor is an open plan module containing a living room, dining area, and a kitchen that can be entirely open to the outside or enclosed by a curtain. Sensitive to the clients’ desire for more defined communal/private spaces, the private spaces are more compartmentalized making up the second floor of the home. The master bedroom at one end of the volume looks out onto a grove of trees, and two bathrooms and a guest/office run along the same axis. The design of the home responds specifically to the location and immediate surroundings in terms of solar orientation and footprint, therefore maximizing the microclimate. The construction process also leveraged the efficiency of wood-frame modulars, where approximately 80% of the house was built in a factory. By utilizing the opportunities available for off-site construction, the time required of crews on-site was significantly diminished, minimizing the environmental impact on the local ecosystem, the waste that is typically deposited on or near the site, and the transport of crews and materials. The Dwell Home has become a precedent in demonstrating the superiority of prefabricated building technology over site-built homes in terms of environmental factors, quality and efficiency of building, and the cost and speed of construction and design. Contemporary with warmth and comfort. This condo, located in a delightfully busy San Francisco neighborhood needed a total renovation of the existing space. On the first floor the main living area including a small den, living room, dining area and kitchen needed to be updated. The challenge was to achieve the maximum of comfort, understated elegance and functionality in a small space that would be appropriate for the couple’s everyday life. On the second floor, On the first floor, the style is quiet and sophisticated with clean, simple lines made sumptuous with rich materials. The original kitchen was closed off from the rest of the living space but in the renovation, the kitchen becomes the focal point of the main living area. Opening the kitchen gives the entire condominium a spacious feeling and allows natural light to enter the kitchen. The simple flush lines of the elegant cabinetry create a harmonious rhythm set off by glass, which has been hand etched in a pattern of leaves and branches that mimic the trees visible through the windows. The patterned glass is also used in the pantry door, and allows light from pantry windows to enter the kitchen. Located near the front entry to the condo, the bar counter, a large hardwood plank with a strong grain and deep color adds a striking textural element. On the second floor, changing the master bath was essential. The original layout with the bath tub and toilet on one side of the room and a wall length cabinet with a sink on the opposite wall was adequate but uninteresting. The finishes were uninviting. A portion of an adjacent closet was taken over to enlarge the space. The toilet was moved into the new space allowing the addition of a gracious shower separate from the soaking tub. The wall adjacent to the hallway was also moved out to form a pleasing angle adding space and interest. It also allowed for an angled built-in closet system in the hallway. The sink was moved to the wall opposite the entry door, designed with a floating cabinet. Tall cabinets run perpendicular to the sink cabinet. Photo-David Livingston

When my client approached me with the task of making a full guest bath out of two adjoining closets that measured only 39 x 79 combined, I was curious to see what we could come up with. So pencil to paper, together we came up with a plan that works. Since we were faced with a very limited amount of space, I felt the first step was to get everything up off the floor to allow for a more spacious feel. A wall hung vanity, wall hung toilet and a curb free shower create a sense of space inside the room. A small bump out into the adjacent bedroom was necessary to allow for proper clearances for sink & toilet. Due to the limited space, a wet room concept was used, with the shower open to the rest of the room. Therefore all the materials specified can get wet without damage – porcelain, teak & tile. A small teak flip up bench provides seating in the shower. A teak shelf, medicine cabinet, and niches near the sink and in the shower provide additional areas for storage. A small towel bar on the front of the sink even provides a spot for a hand towel. Proper ventilation and lighting were very important in this small space, so a higher powered ventilation system was used. A combination fan/light and recessed lighting make sure the space is properly illuminated. The large format tone-on-tone tiles that cover the walls floor to ceiling were selected to help make the room appear larger. The smaller format floor tiles in a darker color provide contrast and a surer grip for safety. Architect: Rick Shean & Christopher Simmonds, Christopher Simmonds Architect Inc. Photography By: Peter Fritz “Feels very confident and fluent. Love the contrast between first and second floor, both in material and volume. Excellent modern composition.” This Gatineau Hills home creates a beautiful balance between modern and natural. The natural house design embraces its earthy surroundings, while opening the door to a contemporary aesthetic. The open ground floor, with its interconnected spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, allows sunlight to flow through uninterrupted, showcasing the beauty of the natural light as it varies throughout the day and by season. The façade of reclaimed wood on the upper level, white cement board lining the lower, and large expanses of floor-to-ceiling windows throughout are the perfect package for this chic forest home. A warm wood ceiling overhead and rustic hand-scraped wood floor underfoot wrap you in nature’s best. Marvin’s floor-to-ceiling windows invite in the ever-changing landscape of trees and mountains indoors. From the exterior, the vertical windows lead the eye upward, loosely echoing the vertical lines of the surrounding trees. The large windows and minimal frames effectively framed unique views of the beautiful Gatineau Hills without distracting from them. Further, the windows on the second floor, where the bedrooms are located, are tinted for added privacy. Marvin’s selection of window frame colors further defined this home’s contrasting exterior palette. White window frames were used for the ground floor and black for the second floor. Meyer & Meyer, Inc. Architecture and InteriorsMeyer & Meyer, Inc. Architecture and Interiors
This stately Georgian home in West Newton Hill, Massachusetts was originally built in 1917 for John W. Weeks, a Boston financier who went on to become a U.S. Senator and U.S. Secretary of War. The home’s original architectural details include an elaborate 15-inch deep dentil soffit at the eaves, decorative leaded glass windows, custom marble windowsills, and a beautiful Monson slate roof. Although the owners loved the character of the original home, its formal layout did not suit the family’s lifestyle. The owners charged Meyer & Meyer with complete renovation of the home’s interior, including the design of two sympathetic additions. The first includes an office on the first floor with master bath above. The second and larger addition houses a family room, playroom, mudroom, and a three-car garage off of a new side entry. Front exterior by Sam Gray. All others by Richard Mandelkorn.

Eclectic in style, the home’s modern and ethnic furnishings are unified in color and scale. Many of the pieces were locally custom-made, including a sofa that nestles into the living room’s bay window; living-room chairs cozily upholstered in sheepskin; handcrafted wood dining-room benches and a dining-table top; and vibrant blown-glass sculptures by Portland artist Andy Paiko.
